Only part of the ignorance has been defeated. If any of the other proposals pass, D-III, particularly D-III ice hockey, is in the crapper.

Here is hoping that common sense prevails over academic eliteism.

According to laxpower, the vote was 299-106 in favor of the amendment.

cct2div3, all voting is over. When Prop 65-1 passed, it eliminated the part of the legislation regarding Div I scholarships at the 8 threatened programs. We won!

Congrats to all the programs!!! As a Union grad I am especially happy to see the rivalry with RPI continue in ALL sports - afterall, how can we get revenge if there isn't a next year.

Woohoo!! I'd like to see the roll call results... find out if UC tried to sell us down the river.

As for Hull, if he voted against it you have my permission to do whatever you want to him.

cct,
you're looking in the wrong place for sympathy on the proposals that impact ONLY DIII. Many of the posters here on on record with posts like "I'd rather watch my dog poop than watch DIII hockey"

I think that cct2div3 was referring to how other parts of the legislation affects the DIII schools that play DIII hockey, not those that play up.

It passed about 3-1??? What was I worrying about? :D

cct2div3,
Are you going to change your handle?

Colorado College release (http://www.coloradocollege.edu/Athletics/NCAA/AmendmentVote.cfm)

Amended Legislation Passes at NCAA Convention;
Division I Status Safe for CC Hockey, Women’s Soccer

Proposal 65-1, the amended legislation co-sponsored by Colorado College and seven other institutions that grant financial aid to student-athletes who compete in Division I programs, passed overwhelmingly at the 2004 NCAA Convention in Nashville on Monday afternoon.

The vote to amend Proposal 65 was 296-106 with 17 abstentions. The Division III reform package then passed as amended 304-89 with 18 abstentions.

The outcome preserves men's ice hockey and women's soccer at the Division I level at CC and the other historic sports programs at Clarkson University, Hartwick College, Johns Hopkins University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rutgers-Newark, St. Lawrence University, and SUNY-Oneonta.

"We are extremely grateful for the support that we received from our partners in Division III," Colorado College President Richard F. Celeste said. "We were confident that, once the Division III membership was able to study Proposal 65 and the negative effect it would have on our athletic programs, they would agree that the proposed legislation would do nothing to bring our academic mission and athletic participation into greater balance.

"On a personal note, I would like to thank the presidents, athletic directors, faculty athletic representatives and public relations staffs at each of our eight institutions that have worked so hard to inform their Division III peers and gain their support. Their efforts have preserved storied athletic programs that are intimately identified with their colleges and have been run as model programs for the last 50 to 100 years - long before division classifications existed."

Colorado College has sponsored ice hockey since 1937 and women's soccer since 1984. CC has won two national championships in hockey and played host to the national championship game eleven times between 1948 and 1969. The women's soccer team has made eight NCAA tournament appearances and advanced to the championship match in 1986 and 1989.

"We are appreciative of the interest and support we have had from so many fans, alumni, and the Colorado College community," said Julie Soriero, CC's acting director of athletics. "We are relieved, and certainly excited, that we can continue to maintain our two Division I programs at the level of success and commitment we have traditionally established and enjoyed."

An NCAA waiver granted in 1983 allowed CC and the seven other institutions to sponsor athletic programs that compete at the Division I level because of a waiver granted by the NCAA in waiver was granted in 1982-1983. Over the last two decades, CC has continued to develop the rich tradition and prominence of its Division I sports in harmony with its Division III sports programs.

The amendment offered by the eight schools, Proposal 65-1, provided an opportunity for the Division III membership to address the philosophical concerns about multi-divisional classification raised by Proposal 65. It did so, however, without harming the eight members who, for reasons of tradition, have successfully participated in a Division I sport.

Some lyrics that seem appropriate for Dr. McCardell at this point... Metallica's "King Nothing." They seem to fit to a T.

Wish I may
Wish i might
Have this wish tonight
Are you satisfied?

Dig for gold
Dig for fame
You dig to make your name
Are you pacified?

All the wants you waste
All the things you've chased

And it all crashes down
And you break your crown
And you point your finger
But there's no one around

Just want one thing
Just to play the king
But the castle crumbled
And you've left with just a name
Where's your crown, King Nothing?

Hard and cold
Bought and sold
A heart as hard as gold
Are you satisfied

Wish I might
Wish I may
You wish your life away
Are you pacified

All the wants you waste
All the things you've chased

And it all crashes down
And you break your crown
And you point your finger
But there's no one around

Just want one thing
Just to play the king
But the castle crumbled
And you've left with just a name
Where's your crown, King Nothing?

I wish I may
I wish I might
Have this wish I wish tonight

I want the star
i want it now
I want it all and i don't care how

And it all crashes down
And you break your crown
And you point your finger
But there's no one around

Just want one thing
Just to play the king
But the castle crumbled
And you've left with just a name
Where's your crown, King Nothing?

not to be a spoilsport, but remember, most of the other reform proposals did or will pass.

While Sauer noted that the margin of the vote was significant, he did say that there was passionate debate on the convention floor. The first speaker on the subject was particularly vociferous in her opposition to Division III schools playing a Division I sport.

Joe AFAIK, you cannot. Possibly you can write to USCHO and they can do it for you. Besides for keeping your membership date and number of posts, there is no reason not to just resubscribe.

Actually, didn't you start using your handle long before this all started, and you were commenting upon Clarkson's performance in recent years compared to their historical perfroamnce?

Sometimes in some small ways there is justice and the system works. Never ever should have had to come to this. But will take this little victory. Go RPI, Go Colorado College, Go St Lawrence, and much as I hate to say it-Go Clarkson. Here is to decades of fine hockey provided by 4 great institutions.

What did you have in mind? At the very least, I hope Cornell fans give Union a little "extra attention" this weekend.

One school that did not vote for the amendment was Union, a fellow ECAC member to St. Lawrence, Clarkson and Rensselaer. According to Buttafuoco, Union president Roger Hull was torn. "His collegiality was to support 65-1, but his conscience as a president was that Union should not support 65-1 and support the reform movement."
