This was posted on the ECAC Picks Thread:
I'm picking the three schools impacted by the D-3 vote to win all games this week, in protest of John McCardell's ignorance. I'm also picking Union to lose both games because I hear they're undecided on how to vote on Prop 65 (and 65-1) - Union should be ashamed if what I've heard is indeed true:
Union at Cornell: Down with Union
RPI at Colgate: Go Engineers
Clarkson at Dartmouth: Go Knights
St. Lawrence at Vermont: Go Saints
Saturday
RPI at Cornell: Go Engineers
Union at Colgate: Down with Union
St. Lawrence at Dartmouth: Go Saints
Clarkson at Vermont: Go Knights
Total goals = 66 = 65 + 1 (why not?)
Good luck to Clarkson, CC, RPI, and SLU tomorrow, in what just may be the most important "game" in their respective histories.

There is an interesting article in today's Albany Times Union (sports page) titled "NCAA head asks for more integrity in college sports". In references some quotes that Miles Brand made yesterday in Nashville.
Keeping in mind that a waiver has been filed with respect to the proposition, Brand was attributed to the following statement within the article:
"Brand, in his second year as president, also touched on academic reform and said the NCAA needs to be more flexible in interpreting rules and granting waivers."
I may be overly optimistic, but I'm beginning to think that the proposition passes, as does the waiver.

the vote, please visit www.rpi.edu/dept/athletics beginning Monday afternoon or early evening."
I had been under the impression that the vote was this morning and that the results (and any announcements on contingency if the worst happens) would be sent out already - probably pre-packaged.

There are a lot of delegates at the convention and it is a Roll Call vote. It could take a while.
I am NOT optimistic.
I hope somewhere there will be a list of who voted yea or nay.

It's my understanding that only schools that started to play up before some date are allowed to offer scholarships. I am sure that MikeR knows the details. It's mentioned somewhere on this thread already, but it might be hard to find.
Multi-division classification history (http://www1.ncaa.org/eprise/main/administrator/Historical_Outline.pdf)
1973 - formation of D1, D2, D3
1981 - allow D2 and D3 insititutions to petition to have one sport classified as D1 (exclding f-ball, and b-ball)
1983 - for multi-division institutions, if D1 and D3 have a rule on same topic, apply more stringent rules to the D1 sport. Waiver granted to those playing D1 during the '82-''83 season. This is the waiver everyone mentions.
1985 - allow financial aid exceptions to start an opposite gender team in the same D1 sport.
1987 - defeated elimination of multi-division classification
1991 - defeated elimination of multi-division classification (D1 and D3 passed!!, but required all divisions to approve)
1994 - same ruling as 1983, except allowed sport to follow D1 playing and practice regulations. Also don't allow scholarship D1 players to participate in another sport.

Mike,
Interesting comments about 65 vs 65-1 by President Sullivan. I thought that 65-1 was introduced so schools that didn't want to give blanket approval for schools playing up to be allowed to offer scholarship might allow just the ones who currently do so to be grandfathered. It sounds like it may have just the opposite effect on voting.
That was my first thought when I first read about 65-1, my thinking was skewed that way because of the debate on this thread. In particular the schools that wish to upgrade athletics, or split D3 may fit this category. Is this the situation Union finds itself, against 65-1, and against Prop 65?? This was one of the arguments that Bigfish raised a long time ago, the jealousy factor...ahh the memories ;)
Ralph and Tom, I'm glad you picked up on the "burning on both ends" that President McCardell wishes to accomplish...:D I was hoping someone who followed this closely would!
As President Sullivan stated, the dynamics will be interesting!

TC- Although we disagree about this particular topic, I do respect a valid opinion. I just believe in this case that the Council would have a better argument if they had proposed to eliminate multi-division classification (although I don't agree with either. ;) )
Now they are attempting to justify compromised legislation, poorly I might add. Therefore, I don't respect their reasonings.

Mike,
I 'consider the source' here. NOT you, but such things as the Watertown paper's quotes and the selective quotes posted by various posters whose views are well known. Not exactly where I'd go to get the "reasonings" of proponents. All that's pretty much irrelevant now anyway...
I was surprised to read in the the summary on the NCAA page that they believe there may be controversy on the season limiting proposal. Had seemed to have fairly wide support, though Chris Lerch is voting against it:D

I'm a little confused about the procedure this morning. Jayson Moy's article says the day starts with a roll call vote on the reform package, but Troy Record says there will be more debate this morning. Anyone know what's up? And I just discovered Nashville is in the central time zone. Who knew? (Not me, apparently.)

It's more lax than anything (JHU), but still worth reading.

And I just discovered Nashville is in the central time zone. Who knew? (Not me, apparently.) They have to vote on the amendment-to-the-amendment (65-1) before considering Prop 65. Word should come in regarding the fate of 65-1 before we find the fate of Prop 65, which is good news, because 65-1 can only help.
If word comes in that 65-1 has passed, it's over and the scholarships are saved regardless of how Prop 65 goes. Hell, I'd even start pulling for Prop 65 at that point. If 65-1 fails, it forces us to fall back and fight Prop 65 directly - and at that point, I fear our efforts would be for nought.

I can't speak for UND, but as a hockey fan, I'm pulling for all of you who are effected by this today.
GO UND and don't end our rivalry with CC!

Logic has prevailed and ignorance has been defeated. This is a great day for the 4-schools involved and for NCAA D-1 hockey in general.
Congrats to CC, Clarkson, RPI, and SLU. Your hard work has paid off.

RPIRED,
The individual votes would be quite interesting. If not that, at least we will hopefully hear how close the voting was.
I also would be interested in hearing what RPI (and the other schools') contingency plans really were..
Lastly, I'd like to nominate this thread for The Hall of Fame. Just like the 9-11 thread, this might be interesting reading every once in a while. (And before someone flames me, I am not saying that these two topics are of equal importance, just that they are both worthwhile keeping for posterity.)
