Recent article on proposal (http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/20031224-1108-ncaa-divisioniii.html)
Not much new, just a couple of new pieces...
John McCardell, chairman of the Division III Presidents Council and president of Middlebury College in Vermont, said he's been the recipient of hate mail over the proposed change.
Ralph and Vic, you've been busted:D
"There are a great many successful lacrosse schools that don't offer scholarships," said McCardell, adding that awarding money to athletes is against the philosophy of Division III schools.
Maybe I'm way off-base, but which lacrosse schools?

Certainly puts into question the "great many" statement. Limited to the Ivies, and further limited to Princeton or Brown (which has not won a league title since '94).

McCardell's the one who's off-base. The only lacrosse teams we're talking about are at JHU - is McCardell bitter about their success or something? Why?
Even if what McCardell said is true, where does that leave the other 7 schools, eh? Not all sports are created equally, despite what the NC$$ would seem to prefer.

If one defines success as NC$$ Championships or even NC$$ Tourney Appearances, in the 70's or early 80's certainly Cornell but not since then. In the last 10 years Princeton. If two out of 8 Ivy's represents a great many than McCardell needs to take some math lessions.
As for him receiving hate mail, my heart really bleeds for the *****hole. He gets what he deserves and a whole lot more. And no it was not me :) although I have thought about it.

On first read of that article (which clearly wasn't too thorough) I missedMost school representatives contacted say they will vote against the legislation, Hopkins Athletic Director Tom Calder said. Each school president who is present can cast a vote on the waiver question. That sounds promising.
Only 17 days left.

I was reviewing the previous times (4) this legislation (in some form) has been put to vote at the convention.
The prevention of teams to be classified as D1 in a single sport was almost passed in 1991. (the year I remember Clarkson at the NCAA semi's and the last year of Walker Arena).
1991: Vote to prohibit a Division II or III member institution from being classified in
Division I in one sport for men and/or one sport for women defeated. [Proposal
was a common provision, required adoption by all - approved by Divisions I and
III, defeated by Division II].
Saved by the D2 membership! Does anyone remember this vote? What was the response then?
14 days...

There was a handout in the program for the RPI tournament that could be mailed to Myles Brand. I'm wondering if RPI does this every game or this is a new thing? Either way, it's a great idea.

I think it was Puck Avalanche. Maybe Chief Albany Alumni Bear (CAAB) as well.

...geez..the D3 true student athletes...Middlebury's hockey team is in the finals in Montreal tourney...while the well paid athletes of Holy Cross hockey have yet to win a game...but cashed their checks anyway. Is McCardell in Montreal for the finals? Williams beats Holy Cross in basketball....now this!!!...those boys want to get paid more!!!...more like The Money Honey gets paid as Prez of RPI. kash

To quote the Boston Globe "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story."
Holy Cross does not offer athletic grants in aid in ice hockey. I got that from an HC parent.

In fact, Holy Cross has only recently offered scholarships in men's basketball (and only in hooops), given the recent easing of restrictions by their main conference, the Patriot League.

...geez....Colgate offers scholarships...and there is no Patriot rule against it. Maybe RPI needs scholarships tpo compete with the academics of
patriot League. kash

I was at the Dartmouth and Yale games and the hand out was given at both of those games and also mailed with their alumni magazine.
I hope that everyone who received it took the time to mail it in.

Yes it is. And it is being handed to everyone as they enter the arena for a game. At least at the two games that I attended.
