UMMMM, this sounds more like a good reason for ending athletic scholarships at the play-up schools. If an institution's identity is inextricably intertwined with the granting of athletic scholarships, then something is seriously amiss. . . That's an opinion. I happen to like my school's identity and atmosphere the way it is, as do much of my school's alumni, and I'm not real partial to other schools telling me to change it.

To me it's not about the scholarship, it's about the level of competition. To these schools, scholarships not only increase the level of competition, they increase the level of academics. Just ask Joe Marsh and the professors at St. Lawrence University about the difference between the days before scholarships and today.

You seem to be the type of person that would benefit from becoming a "d4follower." We'll get together for our game, not keep score, and when it's over, we'll all have juice and cookies.

Yeah, I guess you're right, having a school's identity forcibly ripped away from them by other schools isn't a good enough reason to sign the petition...

A friend of mine and I were having dinner tonight talking about this petition. As I said to him "Have you ever heard of Colorado College for anything other than hockey?"

Whether the D-III presidents want to admit it or not, some people actually know these schools BECAUSE of their hockey team. I wouldn't have known St. Lawrence University existed if it wasn't for their hockey team.

boy, that part must be in invisible ink
:D

plus, what D3 said:D

I'm sure the Division III/IV (;)) board has talked about this, but has anyone read Adam Wodon's column on this crap?

Ultimately, why is this particular legislation — about disallowing scholarships for play-up programs — asinine? Because it does nothing to prevent the kinds of abuses they are concerned about. It does nothing to reign in the Mount Union football program, or the Rowan program, notoriously known for actively recruiting D-I transfers. These are Division III schools who act with all the philosophical integrity demanded by D-III athletics, except with one traditional sport that plays in Division I, which abides by all the rules and highest integrity that Division I demands. They have absolutely nothing to do with the "impurity" that's entering Division III.

John McCardell, president of Middlebury College and chair of the President's Council, spins it this way:

"This is not a contest between the pure and the impure, but it acknowledges a major concern about multidivision participation with financial aid," he said to USA Today. "If there is a single, core principle that binds Division III institutions together, it is not giving athletic scholarships. This is part of an attempt to bring our practices into harmony with our philosophy."

I don't know if McCardell, who lords over a great institution with a great athletic program, actually feels this way or he's just following the pack, but when it comes to the specific legislation in queston, these ministers of D-III need a major dose of historical perspective. They have this whole thing insanely backwards.

I don't believe in accusations without evidence, but don't you think that there are hockey programs in Division III that are doing more to hurt the "integrity of Division III" than what these schools playing Division I hockey are doing?

question: I know you frequent the DIII board, so why don't you post this question there?

Bruce,
no, I'm not trying to have a 'war' with you, or even with ritt, for that matter.
as I know guys who have been college hockey fans longer than you've been alive who support the proposals, your blanket statement p!ssed me off a little. no big deal, you doofus;)

this last, I really did wonder. Do you really think many D1 guys will have good responses to your question?

Give me say.....a week or so to translate Kash's comments on the D3 board from this previous year. I should have a good answer by then.

On RPI's side I have noted current players Kirk MacDonald and Ben Barr, the fathers of Barr and Greg Kirk, former hockey player Erick James '69, six women's team players, a couple of former managers, one former assistant coach, and former PA announce Don Birkmayer. I've assuredly missed someone relevant.

How soon to 1000 sigs?

For what it's worth, this petition is now the 2nd most active petition at PetitionOnline.com next to "Put the Star Wars Kid in Episode III." It is listed on the front page of the website now.

I was unsuccessful in finding a decent lacrosse message board, maybe someone knows of one. I sent the proposal info to Ron Ayers (works in Boston), who posted it on the front page of the Clarkson "daily jolt" (website for students). He also forwarded the information to the John Hopkins people who run the jolt side there. They apparently decided to do nothing. I did post the petition and proposal info in the forum....but since it is students who have tuition bills, some don't care.

Clarkson dailyjolt (http://clarkson.dailyjolt.com)

John Hopkins Jolt (http://jhu.dailyjolt.com)

Maybe the wrong audience.

Edit: keep it near the top...
