They are the National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (http://www1.ncaa.org/membership/membership_svcs/saac/index.html)
Each institution has a SAAC, and D1, D2 and D3 have a separate national advisory board.

I hope these guys (http://www.rpi.edu/dept/athletics/saac/meeting_notes.htm) are accurate in their predictions;)
from 10/20 meeting notes:
Looks like the proposal will flop.

from 10/20 meeting notes: I'm impressed, Mike, that you dug that up. Hopefully, they are correct, but these are RPI student athletes who don't exactly represent the DIII membership.
Nothing new, but this came via an RPI alumni news mailing:
OPPOSITION GROWS TO NCAA PROPOSAL TO ELIMINATE ATHLETICS SCHOLARSHIPS
Two prominent national organizations have weighed in against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) proposal that would eliminate the ability of Rensselaer and seven other Division III institutions to award athletic grants-in-aid to their Division I student-athletes.
The NCAA Division III Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA) has objected to the proposal, stating that it "will impose a burden on the affected institutions in terms of potential damage their institutional identities, while no significant benefit will accrue to other membership institutions." More information can be found at http://www.uscho.com/news/2003/11/13_007265.php.
A prominent students' organization also is speaking out against the proposal. The NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has voted to support an amendment which will nullify the offending proposal. More information about SAAC can be found at http://www1.ncaa.org/membership/membership_svcs/saac/index.html.
The amendment (labeled 65-1) was written and submitted to the NCAA by Rensselaer and the other seven Division III institutions that "play up" in a Division I sport. The Division III representatives will vote on the amendment during the NCAA convention on Jan. 12.
Rensselaer is determined to maintain its winning Division I ice hockey team, and is working with the other affected schools to protect their Division I programs.

There are no better schools to put the STUDENT in STUDENT-ATHLETE than the ones being threatened by this proposal, you nutjob.

Kash,
I don't know what your purpose of posting as you do on this thread. I personally believe that there should not be preferentital treatment to athletes when awarding financial aid in DIII sports. I suspect that many DIII schools somehow get around this including those which you regard s being above reproach. DI sports IMO should not be subject to DIII rules even when played at DIII institutions.
When the NCAA divided itself into divisions, it allowed schools to play up in one men's and one women's sport. This was probably the best piece of legislature that the NCAA has ever enacted. One can argue that DI sports should not give athletic scholarships either, however, and this to me is the big thing -- the schools that play up should not be subject to the wims of the DIII councils in those sports.
How Williams and Holy Cross in basketball is relevant to the topic at hand is not at all clear to me. D*mn it's basketball, I couldn't care less.
Ralph (proud to state that he has never attended a basketball game at the pro, college, or HS level).

I don't know if this was posted on this board before or not, I couldn't find it.
I was at the RPI/Yale game last night and RPI has a banner posted in the building asking everyone to sign it and it will be taken to the D-111 metting in January to show support for allowing scholarships at the affected D-111 institutions.
The banner has many signatures including mine and my daughters, but the number of signatures does not represent even the number of spectators that were at the game last night.
Get the word out to sign the banner and support RPI hockey on a D-1 level with scholarships.

EHF,
I don't think that it was mentioned eslewhere. At least I didn't read about it.

Also attributable to the granting of athletic scholarships -
1) RPI football in the Final Four
2) RPI baseball - 13 straight NCAA apperances
3) The Brooklyn Bridge
4) The invention of the Ferris wheel
5) The moon landing
6) The invention of e-mail
7) Bobby Knight's firing

I hope that they leave the banner at HFH until the last minute as there are still a number of home games. It is a very big banner and there is a lot of empty space that could be filled in with signatures.

If it's there on the 28th, I'll definitely sign it.

I just signed the petition. What insanity. Only the NC$$ could come up with something like this. If it eventually passes, we should all file a class action suit to stop it.

It's interesting that the Petition is still getting signatures from current RPI hockey players. Recent additions are Ryan Shields #8446 and Scott Romfo #8471. Considering that Kirk MacDonald was #31 and several others signed in the first few days, I would have expected them all to have signed earlier.
In case anyone has not signed who wants to, please go to http://www.petitiononline.com/NCAAD3/petition.html .
