...geez...I wonder and posted early on that this felt like a stealthy proposal to help NESCAC vs Ivies and other better colleges in recruiting athletes and regular students. I guess it helps justify/amortize the cost of recent investment in palatial athletic facilities. As Ivies hockey is nearly farm team NHL....and other Ecac colleges have to recruit Canadian junior A's to stay competitive....NESCAC becomes the place to play for all but the very best 18 year old Americans. I'd still like to see a direct quote from McCardell on puck slapppers. Yo miker...your should post this excerpt at D3....more interest ocer there...in NESCAC etc. kash.....don't forget Midd has won 5 D3 hockey and 2-3 lax NCAA championships.....at the top of d3 in both sports. eom

Kash - Reading the article certainly indicates that McCardell's philosophy is driving this, just so happens it also helps his institution and league. Sold to the rest of the membership as looking out for the future of D3, supported by the book "reclaiming the game".

Edit: cut and paste the previous "puckslapper" article before it expires. McCardell also responded to a Clarkson fan letter, but did not make any new friends!:D "elitist" and "arrogant" were two of the words to describe his response.

...maybe MCCardell realizes he needs to downgrade SLU, Union, Clarkson etc...to downgrade Ecac-D1 so Midd gets the very best prep players in order to beat the VERY OLD junior players winning at Norwich and Oswego now. D3 is hyper-competitive right now. kash

....hey....now that you guys are organized...why not help out the guys at Skidmore.....where the admoinistration has just announced cancelation of hockey at the end of the season.Geez...loss of D1 scholarships or dropping ice hockey...what's worse? Here's a chance to show your solidarity with D3 athletics and student-athletes. kash

Kash,
The difference is that Skidmore is an internal decision in one college as it was for Iona, Fairfield, MCLA and many others in the past. The proposal was not set in motion by the colleges affected. Which is worse? That could be debated, but in my opinion, if the proposal passes and the affected schools don't switch their entire programs to D-I or D-II, they are as good as dead as viable D-I teams.

...look Clarkson, SLU, RPI...and Union and Colgate are all neighbors of Skids....these petitioners have paid lip service to importance of hocke and D3 student athletes....so let'em do something for a group of hockey players whose program will be cancelled at year end. Hey....escalate the discussion and get the upstate women's hockey teams D1 and 3 to beseech Skids to organize a women's team and maintain the men's team. Now that would be good for hockey!!!! kash

Kash -

It sucks, I'll give you that. But I support the rights of a school to make decisions for itself regarding its programs and athletic department. It would be somewhat hypocritical for us to stand against the proposal in the name of individual institutions making decisions for themselves about scholarships and not say that Skidmore has the right to make decisions for themselves.

If the NCAA or the D-III council decided suddenly that, for whatever reason, Skidmore was not going to be allowed to field an ice hockey team, that would be cause for concern.

Thanks, Tom. That's exactly what I was trying to say.

In the wake of the proposal, the title of this USCHO article provided another scare: http://www.uscho.com/news/2003/09/28_006885.php . Thankfully, it's the other RPI. :)

Skidmore does have a women's team, they just play at the club level. Union used to play them a couple times a year.

Any CC fans out there? Any news lately from the CC regarding the proposal?

read some of the CC site....

If the eight affected schools are not successful in getting the legislation dropped, and the package heads to the NCAA convention floor for a vote in January, CC and its seven colleague institutions will begin a large and very loud campaign to help educate the NCAA membership about this critical issue and the importance of each and every vote. Alumni will have a role in this campaign.

¨ Although CC does not want to comment publicly on what may happen if the Division III membership enacts the proposed legislation, rest assured we are preparing for all eventualities.

What you can do to help:

¨ If you wish to express your opinion on this issue, please write a letter in your own words to the NCAA leadership at: Dr. Myles Brand, National Collegiate Athletic Association, 700 West Washington Street, P.O. Box 6222, Indianapolis, Indiana 46206. Please do not send e-mails to the NCAA at this time.

¨ Should the proposed legislation head to the convention floor for a January vote, the college will issue new guidance on how you can help. This information will be posted on our athletics and alumni Web pages. At some point, we may inquire as to which alumni know personally the president or board chair at other Division III schools or which alumni know newspaper editors in key Division III cities.

New article today from the Yale Daily News. Tried to post a link to the petition but the comments section was not working. Maybe later.

Reform could end scholarships at some ECAC schools (http://www.yaledailynews.com/article.asp?AID=23375)

Petition signing has slowed to a trickle. Any other outlets we haven't explored yet?

I don't believe the petition has been distributed to Clarkson students/alumni, similar to what CC did.

Also noted that Trevor Edwards (clarkson hockey forward) is the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president. If contacted, he may be able to get it distributed to other D3 schools. I believe he stated in a previous news article that he was attempting to gather support from other student-athletes.

RPI, Clarkson, and SLU want to compete for national success. Colgate and Union are content to just play. It shows in their success levels (and that's been rehashed several times on this thread so I'll just leave it at that).

The only recent good news is the big bounce back of CC in the 90's to national prominence( was that tied to more scholarships?....coaching change or other?). All the other trends/news is bad for SLU, CU, RPI.....D1 college hockey is now feeder system to the pros...big wealthy state and other universities...even smaller colleges have moved up. ECAC is no longer a/the top league. The system now attracts the best players to more and more colleges. Even with scholarships.....it's unrealistic to think SLU, RPI or Clarkson can compete for national title....the new guys llike Ohio State will continue to improve their recruiting. You'll be lucky to stay ahead of Union, Colgate, and Holy Cross. kash

We'll see. I disagree completely and I have a feeling that all 4 teams will win a national championship (again, in one case) during my lifetime. ****, that was difficult to say. ;)
