Each time I enjoy a visit to Amherst, I continue to take pleasure in the school and the athletic program. The College has done a great job of creating an atmosphere that supports both academic and athletic excellence.
Here are few of the headlines from the Amherst’s Athletics website highlighting recent women’s teams results.
Amherst Second at New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament
Volleyball Wins Eighth Straight, Defeats Tufts, 3-1
14th-Ranked Women's Soccer Hammers Wesleyan, 6-0
16th-Ranked Field Hockey Upset by Visiting Wesleyan, 2-1, in Overtime
2003 NCAA Champion Women's Lacrosse Team Recognized at Homecoming

It’s only a few games into the season but it is a delight to watch this young Amherst program start off 2-1. Those of you that have read my postings know that I focus more on the education a College offers but I also hoped that Amherst women’s hockey was going to take a big step forward this season. Time will be the judge but having watched the program for the last few years I’d say this is just the beginning for AWH.

Had the opportunity to met the freshman goalie at Amherst. She was at the National Goalie Camp this past summer in Rochester, New York. Everytime I saw her having a free minute, she had a book in her hand!

This young Amherst team continues to develop, taking strides each month. The program has a new look and energy about it.
A couple of recent road wins, with clutch goals scored late in the third and in OT will help build their confidence.
Hats off to Coaches Plumer and DeSimone for getting the kids to step up their game.

The Amherst girls did a surprizing job holding their own against Bowdoin last weekend. I could see the difference from last season. I was particularly struck by their defensive skills...the score and stats for that game don't tell the whole story....

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College sophomore Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Women’s Ice Hockey Player of the Week on Monday. Sisti, a forward, had two goals and three assists in the Jeffs’ two victories last week, leading them on their current three-game winning streak.

This young Amherst team split on the weekend, continuing to show improvement. Amherst is a program in transition, young, skating hard and learning how to compete with the top of the NESCAC. It was fun to be in the stands for both games, good crowds, watching the team develop.

Looks like Amherst gave Bowdoin a good battle today....It is good to see Amherst rising in the ranks of DivIII women's hockey...to hold an extremely strong skating Bowdoin team to 35 shots on goal puts the Amherst women truly in the hunt for DivIII respectability..it is nice to see Jim Plumer bring this program to where it should be!!!

Amherst’s young team hit the ten win mark this weekend with a sweep on the road. Another indication of the progress the program has made this season and of more good things to come.

The young Jeff’s continue their solid play, taking two wins, their second sweep in as many weekends.
Their 12-11 record overall gives this squad the most wins in a season by an Amherst women’s team, with one game remaining before they begin the playoffs.

Amherst finished their regular season schedule with a flourish tonight, winning 5-3 at home vs. Conn College.
The 13 wins and their 7-9 NESCAC record are both season highs in the young history of the Amherst women’s program.
Congratulations to Coaches Plumer and DeSimone. The players were focused and ready to play.
Now the wait to see where things land after the remaining NESCAC schedule is completed this weekend.

Always risky to quote one's son (above) but definitely agree w/ your assessment of Amherst's season & the terrific jobs done by the coaches & players there. It appears that Coaches Plumer & DeSimone have instilled some confidence in the team & the result is Amherst's best season ever!
I'm sure that the obvious improvement in the program will increase its attractiveness to prospective players. Add-in a couple of good recruiting classes and the Midd's, Bow' & William's of the conference will have to take even more notice than they, presumably, have already!
I'd also like to commend Donna Wright & her Wesleyan team. If they win their remaining two games (Bow/Colby), they will finish the regular season all-alone in fourth place in the conference ... win one & they finish tied for fourth w/ the aforementioned, very improved, Amherst team. And, they've accomplished all w/ the equivalent of 2/3rd's of a team, i.e. 14 players, just 12 skaters! There are several worthy candidates for NESCAC Coach-of-the-Year consideration and I believe that the job that she's done this season puts Coach Wright in the mix!

Amherst Highlights from the 2003-04 Season
NESCAC: doubled points, 5 more wins, 17 more goals for, 8 less goals scored against
Overall: 10 more wins, 38 more goals for, 29 less goals scored against
The credit goes to these kids and their coaches. They worked hard all year and showed improvement as the season went on, winning NESCAC games against opponents who they had lost to earlier in the season.
In Coach Plummer’s first season the team took solid steps forward and the program had a great year to build on.
And it's not over yet!
Good Luck vs. Hamilton in the playoffs

From part of NESCAC Press Release:
AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's hockey team finished its
regular season at 13-11 overall and 7-9 in conference play, setting a
single-season school record for wins and earning a third consecutive
trip to the seven-team NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament. The
Jeffs tied Hamilton College for fourth place in the conference
standings, but Hamilton was awarded the No. 4 seed and a first-round
home game against fifth-seeded Amherst using a predetermined conference
tiebreaker system.
The Jeffs and Continentals square off in the quarterfinals this Saturday at 2:00 PM

Last year was a breakthrough for the program.
Amherst will be losing Assistant Coach Emma DeSimone this year. During each of Emma’s two years, the program showed marked improvement in recruiting and play. I wish her all the best.
Second year coach Jim Plumer will be building on a very strong first season showing.
My bets are that the dramatic improvement will continue under Plumer’s guidance.

Amherst ice hockey will have a new assistant coach this season. Following in the footsteps of Emma DeSimone will be former Bowdoin player Britney Carr. Carr, who graduated from Bowdoin this past May, was a 3-sport athlete at Bowdoin for 4 years, playing ice hockey, field hockey and softball.
Sounds like a dedicated athlete and a great addition for head coach Jim Plumer and the Amherst program.
