...who started the rumor of tightening standards for athletes.....Williams voluntarily eased up on jocks as their 85%+ winning % was getting embarrassing. kash

Its been this way for a long time, the NESCAC schools have a very high academic standing, and thats good. It should be looked on as a positive. I think its great that the schools adhere to this way of thinking. While sports and hockey specifically, are important to us, in the grand scheme of things, they are kept in proper order of priority in this league of schools. While I too get frustrated, when players I know want to attend these schools, but cannot get in, its the right thing. Middlebury is in a great spot, in that players with grades, go to them. The other NESCAC have to hope for dropoffs from Middlebury and The IVY`s, but I think things will change. The problem is that Middlebury has always been good, My opinion, and again my opinion is, that as other strong D-3 schools (Elmira, Manhattanville) continue to push Middlebury down into the middle of the pack, the other schools in NESCAC will get a more level playing field. The D-3 are showing the most growth, it will even off soon.

Before a prospective student (who in this case happens to be a hockey player) makes the decision as to which school she would most like to attend, she must ask herself, "If for some reason, I am unable to play hockey, is this the place where I really want to spend the next four years of my life?" Even within NESCAC, the schools are certainly not all the same. So make sure that you choose the type of school and the kind of environment that you feel fits you best, and then consider your sport. I've seen too many talented women athletes go happily off to college in love with their sport (and the sweet song that the coaches sing to prospective players) and end up being very unhappy with their school. School first. Sports second.

It is vitally important that players and parents consider the school first and the hockey second.

Granted this is hockey message board but I could not agree with you more.

I know of many players who went in making a decision about hockey only to have events take their own course and then the players are left with their realization that the school was not a good fit.

Amherst is a great school. So are many others. The Amherst hockey team is going to improve but the most important thing is to choose any college based on its educational opportunity for each student.

I agree on all your points. Amherst Women's hockey has been sub par, and it will get better.

The word is that a great group of players have expressed interest in Amherst this fall and the number of visits is a strong indication. Plumer/DeSimone have done their home work!

....I don't think losing ground to EC and M'ville will hurt Midd recruiting over time...the rink and some moderate fan interest will be an advantage over Amh and even Williams....see attendance at Amh-Williams game...four!!!..that's 4 fans!!! Amherst M+W hockey needs some fan interest.....the longest hardest season for little fan interest. kash

I have attended a number of men’s games and numerous women’s games. Attendance has been great, similar to most NESCAC hockey games.

I don't know about attendance for games played at Williams versus Amherst but there was a great crowd last year at Orr rink for the home game against Williams.

The group of players looking this fall at Amherst women’s program has been very strong and the energy level of the program is high. It will be a fun team to watch.

....Amherst looks like worst attendance in NESCAC with the possible exception of Wesleyan+ Conn college. kash

...Williams at Amh was just above 400....vs ancient rival....elite teams Norw, Midd, Trin did not draw much at all...Bowd late was okay at 300+. Realize these other colleges are playing numerous games in front of 500 and often 1,000+. Amh campus is not very interested and/or hockey savvy. I'd like to see more attendance and more commitment to hockey at Amherst...Gerety particularly did not like hockey...having rejected a rink the Whalers wanted to build on Trin campus. kash

Coach Plumer is certainly working hard in his recruiting efforts. The last two weekends he was spotted at NEGHL U-19A games.

AWH, I'm not surprised to hear that there is a lot of interest from prospective recruits, given the high quality of an Amherst education. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to turn around the program.

OK as far as the attendance thing goes: First of all, anyone who's been to a game knows that those figures are way off. Plus, this is division 3, You can't expect a lot of people. I think tthe game will get better, and as they do, so will the attendance. As far as your discussion about men's attendance, frankly I just don't see the point in discussing on the Women's board.

Oh and Kash, the game that supposedly had 4 people. that was at Williams, you might to do a little more homework pal.

Cheers..........Cash or Credit??????? I'l go with the debit card;)

between women's and men's attendance...see Midd, Bowd etc. Amherst doesn't seem very supportive of hockey..as fans. No big deal. BTW...I knew that game was at Williams...geez...not even parents are showing up. kash

Do you really believe that there were only 4 people at that game?? Come on man, common sense should prevail here. There were 4 people at the amherst williams game, just like there were 5 people at the williams middlebury game? Do you really believe that? Yeah, huge Middlebury draw there. You catch my drift pal. You can't go by what the box score says. But just like always kash, all talk no facts. You really should look this stuff up before you post it.

Cheers.......cash or......ahh whatever im broke anyway

It was great to hear that Coach Plumer was at a few NEGHL games. Those are the top teams in Eastern Mass and rich with talent. In a way it doesn’t surprise me though, knowing that he has been part of successful recruiting efforts in his previous years at Bowdoin.

Attendance for Amherst games at home and on the road has been the same as other women’s programs except for a few exceptions.

This first year under a new coach and in seasons to come, as the program improves, attendance will take care of it’s self. Amherst has a strong athletic program in general and women’s hockey will soon be at that same level.

.....even in their rare great season...finals of NESCAC....Amherst only drew 200+/- fans for the biggest rivals....Midd, Norw, Trin. Only the Williams and Bowdoin play off game drew more than 500 fans. Amherst is not a hockey campus....think Haverford with better football team. kash

Why must you insist on this connection to men's hockey. This is a WOmen's hockey board. Emphasis on the WO. We get the point that Amherst may not be a hockey school. But neither is Trinity, now is it. Do they really pack them in at the Ice Palace at Kingswood Oxford for the women's games? According to collegehockeystats.com there were 100 people at every Trinity game except a couple. Hmmm, exactly 100 every time, I believe that  let's just say we can't go by the attendance from collegehockeystats and close the issue.

Cheers.......Cash, nope, lets go with a check, hope it doesn't bounce.

The energy around the team this fall is very high. The players see a difference in the coaches’ focus, efforts towards recruiting, and developing a new set of expectations and systems for this young team.

I know that those supporting the team are looking forward to a great season in the stands.
