Don't tell me the Institute has taken to referring to all Freshmen as "First-Year Students."
It looks that way. http://www.fye.rpi.edu/ :)

From the RPI locator
Jodi Blair Yaworski
Class: First-Year Student
Curriculum: Undeclared Engineering
Considering her middle name and that she is from Calgary, I wonder if she is a sister of Yale's Blair Yaworski.

If that's her brother then she's probably a significant size upgrade for the defense. Blair Yaworski is a Lord-sized (as in Andrew) forward for the Bulldogs.
As for the first-year student thing, it seems to be a trend. At many state schools it is increasingly common for students to take 5 years to graduate. In fact, at UConn they refer to students by the number of semesters they've been on campus. It sounds funny to hear a kid referred to as an "8th semester finance major."
First year student.....bah! Next thing you know they'll be getting rid of the beanies.............

I didn't realize that they still issued beanies. I still have mine, but I don't even recall them being used in the latter years that I was in Troy (64-74).
Back to Yaworski. I checked Yale's Media Guide on line, but Blair's page doesn't mention whether or not he has a sister.

I was kidding. They went out of style about the same time that someone figured out that "duck and cover" wouldn't work.

PC, hooray!

Whitney Naslund has appeared in the RPI locator. That means that all four known recruits are listed.
Whitney Rose Naslund
Class: First-Year Student
Curriculum: Undeclared
Now, if I had absolutely no life, I would look up every possible recruit in the locator to find out who else RPI has recruited. However, I do have a life, as miniscule as may be. :D

C'mon Ralph. After reviewing the roster I expect that Burke will add one additional defense(wo)man, one forward and a walk-on goalie. So that makes it easy - all you have to do is cross-reference every D-I hockey prospect against the locator. You've started to slack off in your dedication to the 'Tute. I guess we'll forgive you because the men's coaching situation has probably become a distraction.
In all seriousness, last year's class included a number of names that I'd never heard associated with RPI until they showed up in the press release. I expect a similar pattern this year - and given what's going on in the athletic department it may be quite a while before we know the precise make-up of the 2006-2007 roster.

You are correct that last year there were not even rumors here about several of RPI's recruits. That surprises me in that there are people who post on USCHO from all over the US and Canada.

If Andy Murray becomes the men's head coach then the women's team just won five more games instantly.

Sounds like she's going to be an outstanding addition to the women's hockey team.
Many years ago at RPI I had a TA named Ted Weidner for a math recitation section. He was a hockey fan. I hadn't thought of his name for 20 years (it's been long enough that I can't even remember which course I was taking), but I half expected to find out that Allysen is his daughter. Alas, she is not.

That's a great article.
Red Cloud,
Not only would the women's hockey team have won five more games, but the football team would have gone undefeated.

I like how they think that RPI is in a suburb. :D If Murray came the baseball team would win the D-III World Series.

Press release:
WOMEN'S HOCKEY ANNOUNCES RECRUITS
Four forwards and two defensemen set to join Engineers
TROY, N.Y. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) head women's ice hockey coach John Burke has announced that six student-athletes will make up the program's Class of 2010. Among those expected to join the team beginning this fall are four forwards and two defensemen.
Four of the players are from the United States, including a standout from nearby Queensbury, and the other two hail from Canada.
"This is a group we expect to contribute right away as we transition into the very competitive ECAC Hockey League," said Burke, who guided the Engineers to an 18-6-2 record last season, there first in Division I. "We look forward to them joining our strong nucleus of returning student-athletes and helping to maintain the level of excellence that has been established at Rensselaer since the program began."
Below is an alphabetical list of Rensselaer's recruits:
Name Pos. Ht. Hometown/Previous Team(s)
Rossli Chace F 5-7 Hampton Falls, NH/Governor Dummer Academy & New Hampshire Selects
Laura Gersten D 5-4 Queensbury, NY/Troy-Albany IceCats
Whitney Naslund F 5-5 Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson High
Allysen Weidner F 5-7 Wichita, KS/Shattuck St. Mary's
Allison Wright F 5-6 Oakville, ON/Oakville Ice
Jodi Yaworski D 5-8 Clagary, AB/Choate Rosemay Hall & Connecticut Polar Bears
The Engineers return seven of their top eight scorers, including each of the first four. Among those expected back are nine forwards, four defensemen and two goaltenders.
Rensselaer, which played as an independent in 2005-06, will compete in the ECACHL, which features Brown University, Clarkson University, Colgate University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Quinnipiac University, St. Lawrence University, Union College and Yale University beginning in 2006-07.
Add Rossli Chace and Allison Wright

I expected an extra forward and a defensman, but the two additions are both forwards. Assuming that Libaridian and Menken are both forwards (they were on the roster on D, but played forward in the two games I watched), then there are only 6 defensemen on the roster.
The other curiousity is the implied lack of mention of Aho. If all the players with remaining eligibility are back (and given the assumption above), then they have the 9 returning forwards mentioned without including her. She's not a returning 2005-2006 player, but given what I've heard I hope she is on the 2006-2007 roster.

Anyone know if she is related to Yale forward Blair Yaworski? They are both from Calgary so I was just wondering.
