Sounds like they will be back this weekend. I'm looking forward to it.

Is anyone else planning to attend? A quick note: while the Poly is correct that SHU is in Fairfield, the hockey teams play 3 towns over at the Milford Ice Pavillion on Bic Drive (Exit 35 off I-95).

My indoctrination to RPI Women's Hockey was a good one as they downed Sacred Heart 2-0. The Engineers are a technically sound team (how appropriate) with a few real standouts. The freshman class, in particular, represents an outstanding piece of 1st scholarship year recruiting by Burke. Players who stood out in my mind included Daniel, Stewart, Jacquard-Sowa, and Boik, but it was a sound all-around effort by the entire club. This team has a very bright future.

Although the score was much closer than their earlier meetings, RPI dominated the game - particularly in the second period. However, the SHU goalie, after giving up the second goal on a 100 foot short-handed wrist shot (it was actually going wide, bounced, and I think it hit the inside edge of the goalie's pad and was re-directed into the net), suddenly turned into a female Martin Brodeur. She must have stopped at least 5 breakaways in the 2nd period alone. Very impressive.

SHU also has a little dynamo freshman forward named Gina Arnone. She was easily the fasted player on the ice and one of the most skilled. She has all-league potential, if only SHU had a league.

All in all it was a fun night. If my kids' social calendar permits I'll try to make it back for the second game of the series tomorrow.

BTW: I wonder how SHU came up with 116 for the attendance figure as admission is free and you can just walk in.

RPI82 thanks for the comments on the game. For those of us only able to get to a few games each year its always nice to get these comments on how the team played. Nice to hear the team dominated the game, but the lack of goal production against a team like Sacred Heart is surprising, especially after reading that one of the two goals was on a dump-in that the SH goal mishandled. Hopefully they will fill the net with pucks today.

I don't believe Daniels is a freshman. She's a junior.

Sarah Daniel is indeed a Junior, but I don't think that rpi82 meant to imply that she is a Freshman.

After 1 period RPI leads SHU 4-0. The game is on Gametracker.

Schiff was goalie in the first period for RPI and Ford in the 2nd and 3rd. Neither Mayr nor Onksen apparently made the trip.

For those looking for a dominant effort by the Engineers, they got it in this game. The first two periods were all RPI. Put it this way, the box score says that Ford played the 2nd and 3rd periods, and I didn't even notice that Schiff was out until Ford led the team onto the ice for the 3rd period. There was very little action to that point around the RPI net.

RPI was stronger in all phases, including generating more traffic around the front of the SHU net. The first goal came on a power play slapper by McNamara through traffic that apparently went in off McDonald. McDonald followed that up by getting a goal on a strong move to the slot (she won the puck in the corner, drove straight to the slot and beat the goalie cleanly with a wrister) and an assist on a 2 on 1 to have a 3 point night in the first 15 minutes of play. The first period ended 4-0 and the game was, for all intents and purposes, over.

In addition to the players who stood out on Friday, the Engineers received very strong efforts from McDonald, Barbera and McNamara. With the strength of this team being the underclassmen, there is every reason to think they will be quite competitive in their inaugural ECAC season. I'm looking forward to seeing them next season at the Yale Whale and against QU.

FYI, I think Mayr is out with an injury. She was in the stands and appeared to have a slight limp when she went to the locker room between periods.

Any thoughts on the upcoming game with Plattsburgh? This "homey" is going with Plattsburgh. They looked very tough against Middlebury and I look for them to beat RPI by one goal.

Some of the experts out here think it's a done deal "W" for RPI vs. Plattsburgh,.....me thinks the SUNY school prevails, much like yourself and the Engineers have no easy finish to their season, if the other opponents show up and compete,.....as I said before, it wouldn't surprise me to see RPI stumble to the finish line,.....

Based on what I saw of Plattsburgh last year and what I have seen of RPI last year and this year (before Christmas), I would say this: 1) Plattsburgh could beat several D1 teams, but RPI probably isn't one of them; 2) RPI should win by about 2 goals. Plattsburgh would need to be a couple of goals better than they were last year (quite possible), or RPI a couple of goals weaker than they were before Christmas (don't know why they would be) for it to be even up, IMHO.

The only comparisons in terms of common opponents are Elmira and Utica. RPI dominated each of those teams. Plattsburgh has also beaten those teams but I can't speak to the manner in which they won. Assuming RPI has a full squad, they will be the best team that Plattsburgh will face all year. Plattsburgh will have to play a solid 60 minutes, stay out of the penalty box, and most likely have their goalie stand on her head in order to win.

Plattsburgh beat RPI 3-0 last year in Plattsburgh. Looking at scores and shots, it appears that RPI did somewhat better vs. Utica and Elmira than Plattsburgh did this year. Assuming that none of the important RPI players are injured or suspended, I think that RPI should be favored.

Are you sure about several Div. I teams? I doubt that unless they play Union 5 times.

My prediction: Plattsburgh 2 RPI 1

Not sure I understand your point MIC. RPI has beaten several Div 1 teams (Colgate, Connecticut, Northeastern, BU, Robert Morris, Union,) and if not for a short bench should have beaten Vermont. And you are predicting that Plattsburgh will beat RPI, but doubt that Plattsburgh could beat several Div 1 teams.

Just talked to someone who was at the McGill / RPI game (McGill won 3-2). Sounds like both teams played very well - a high tempo game. Haven't heard details on the scoring, or who was in net. Sarah Daniel was not in the lineup for RPI but will be back for their final four games, and I think that otherwise RPI had everyone on board. McGill is now 2-3 on the year against D1 NCAA teams, splitting with RPI (two one-goal games), losing 1-0 to Yale, beating Dartmouth 3-2, and losing to St.Lawrence 4-1. Currently ranked #4 in Canada.

I am saying that Plattsburgh couldnt beat "several" Div. I teams. I do, however, think they will beat RPI.
