The women came back from a 2-0 deficit against Union to win 5-2. http://www.collegehockeystats.net/0506/boxes/wrenuni1.j06. Two goals each by McDonald and Stewart, one by Guillemette.

Nice to have the win, but once again it looks like RPI started slow. For a team that now has a record of 12-1-2 (including exhibition games), their first period record is now 3-4-8  ! Burke must be running out of first intermission speech ideas

No, we are not doing any games tonight, and of course, the men's game against SLU is tomorrow.

Nice win for RPI tonight against UConn to start their long string of road games. Would be interested in any reports from anyone who saw the game.

Another impressive win over an established program. The Huskies are also a relatively young program, but last season they made it to the HE finals. Who would have thought the Engineers would beat several legitimate D-I teams in their first year with the big girls? While the big test against Clarkson lies ahead, they have already exceeded any reasonable expectations. Burke has done a fantastic job.

I hoped to head up to Storrs for tonight's game but got stuck on some business matters until it was too late to make the 90 minute trek. However, I'm really looking forward to the Sacred Heart games in a few weeks as the rink is nearby (oddly enough the campus is only 5 minutes away but they play in a community rink that's 15 minutes in the other direction). The competition won't be as good as the Huskies, but it will be a great opportunity for the women to show their skills.

Two big road wins for RPI this weekend against Hockey East opponents. Record for the year now is 4-1-1 against HE. I wasn't at the games, but it sounds like RPI continues to play a very gritty, disciplined defensive game and to get strong goaltending (Schiff yesterday and Mayr today). Things don't get any easier the next two weeks with road games against Wayne State, Clarkson and Vermont.

I am interested in finding out if RPI is able to attract a class for next fall that can match this year's Freshmen. So far, two recruits and Julie Aho will probably return. I would think that RPI needs to have a somehwat larger roster to allow for an injury or two.

RPI seems to announce their recruits later than most teams, so all that we are seeing so far is where an announcement has been made in some form by the player's existing team. I think that the Engineers will end up recruiting at least as many new players as they are losing this year to graduation (6). But I am also anxiously waiting to hear some more details. Although the team is proving to be quite competitive already with the bottom half of ECACHL and Hockey East they will need another strong recruiting class to be able to hold their own next year against teams that are being bolstered by the return of a number of U.S. and Canadian olympic team members.

hab,
The posts on the resruit threads have been a combination of team announcements and messages by people who know from personal knowledge that a particular player has committed. I agree that RPI is noted for being late in making official annoucements. The same thing has been going on with the men's team for years. I would, however, think that people would be posting about other recrutis from personal knowledge if they had happened. IIRC, last year, we found out about McDonald, Guillemette, and the two goalies early. The other five we only found out when RPI annouced them. Since it is all on this thread, I'll look for the dates and post again.

Well, it does look like we may have a bit of waiting

McDonald 3/30/05
Guillemette 4/3/05
Ford 4/12/05
Mayr 6/1/05
the rest 7/12/05

How good is RPI? They are not eligible for post season play so won't show up in any of the polls, but if they could attract votes, where would they rank?

On the one hand, their record is outstanding (tied with UNH for highest win percentage in Div 1), but on the other hand their schedule has been made up almost entirely of teams in the bottom half of the rankings. In my view, RPI is probably somewhere near the middle of the pack (say, 15-18 out of 32 teams), a great place to be for their first year. But arguements can be made for them to be ranked higher. Some of the mathematical approaches to rankings, which take into account record but also strength of opponents, have them as high as 9-12 (see http://vortex.bd.psu.edu/~rutter/WomensRankings.html). So, how would they stack up against a team that is ranked around #10? We may get some idea once they play Clarkson (currently #8 and #9 in the two polls). Providence is currently #10 and #11 in the two polls (and may move up after this weekend's strong results against Minn State) and have had a number of common opponents with RPI. Providence and RPI have the same record against Colgate (a win and a tie). Prov has a better record against Maine (1-0-1 compared to RPI's 0-1-1) and Northeastern (2-0 versus RPI's 1-0), but a worse record against BU (1-1-0 versus RPI's 2-0-0) and UConn (a loss versus RPI's win). So my estimate of "middle of the pack" may be conservative, but the next two weekends will tell us a lot.

Is there a link to listen to the RPI vs. WSU tomorrow and Saturday? I thought I saw a link in an announcement that advertised the double header of the Women's and Men's games at the State Fair Grounds.

The Women's games start at 4PM EST Friday and Saturday.

If anyone has a link it would be appreciated.

I listened to the game. Thanks for posting the link. The women put up a good fight, but lost 2-1. There were a lot of 5 on 3 situations for both teams, and the play overall seemed fairly even.

I thought that Wayne State's play-by-play announcer was poor. IMO, it wasn't so much that he was a homer, but that he didn't bother doing any homework prior to the game. He did not even learn the names of RPI's players, only mentioning them when there were penalties or when RPI scored their goal. He did know that RPI's goalie was named Schiff, but called her Rosetta early in the game and Rosanna later on. The color person, a recent WSU graduate, wasn't bad except she seemed to giggle now and then. It makes one realize the professionalism shown by all of RPI's announcers.
