Julie is actually on co-op for both semesters this year. It's actually two separate co-ops, not just one year long co-op, but I have heard she has been skating a bit and plans to be ready to go next season. She'll have two years of eligibility left. Do you know if she also plans to be on the team in 2007-8?

Itty - that would be great if you could post updates! Those of us that can't make it to games definitely appreciate updates on the board when WRPI isn't broadcasting (and when it is!). THANKS! Also, if you start to run out of battery life, there are plugs down behind the curtain in back of the pep band stand...if you can get to them it might help you to plug in between periods

Happy to do it. I'm going to try to be there tomorrow afternoon as well, but that's not nearly as certain. And thanks for the tip about the outlets. That'll come in handy...

After sweeping BU this weekend, and seeing that Colgate beat both Brown and Yale, it is becoming more and more apparent that RPI should have built a more challenging schedule this year. This team is very good, but they are not likely to get a lot of credit because they don't have enough games against top teams. I don't fault Burke for this. Initially the schedule looked well designed. We all just underestimated this team. I would like to see them playing some of the top teams, but we will have to wait til next year. Unfortunately, next year will be a very different story, as teams like Harvard and Dartmouth will have their Olympians back and it will be tough to compete against them. Hopefully,we will bring in another half dozen really good new players next year and continue to surprise everyone!!!!

Hab,
I agree that RPI should have played a tougher schedule. Somewhere there is a post on this thread stating that SLU was willing to give us a game this season, but RPI decided that they did not want to play them yet. So we would probably have lost and probably badly. I also don't see what the problem would have been. Union will lose to the top teams of the ECAC by larger margins.

Has anyone heard anything about recruits for next season? There has not been anything posted yet on the recruits thread. Are the RPI women going to be like the RPI men have been each year prior to this one in that they are very late compared to other schools in getting commmitments?

It's looking awfully good for the team for the future. It seems that the team could be competitive top to bottom in the ECAC right now, let alone next year when the second D1 crop of recruits comes in and Julie Aho comes back.

Is anybody noticing what Clarkson is doing? Wow.

According to another post in the 06 Verbal Commitments thread:

Allysen Weidner F Shattuck-St. Mary's to RPI

Not sure where the info originally came from though, so just take this as a relay of possibly incorrect info :D

There is a link to an Excel spreadsheet with stats on this page. I don't have Excel on this computer (at home).

From their site her birth year is 1990.

She'll be the youngest one on campus.

Was she on Oprah's "Wonder Kids" episode?

It says 10/2/87 in many places on the net.

I just noticed that in this year's stats http://www.s-sm.org/ftpimages/131/download/download_group1675_id84445.xls Allysen Weidner's birthdate is given as 10/2/1990 instead of 10/2/1987 as elsewhere. I think that 1987 is correct, but maybe in past years she lied about her age. Most likely it's just a misprint. I notice that another "girl" is listed as born on 3/27/1900.

Weidner's stats to date are 17-9-7-16-16.

Here's last year's hockey program with team and individual pictures of all of SSM's teams. http://www.s-sm.org/ftpimages/131/download/download_group1675_id43019.pdf (Large file.)

Although there is not much on the net about Weidner, I did find more through a google search than for any of last year's women's recruits. That's probably mainly because SSM is quite visible. Here's an entry in a book of condolences for a former Wichita Thunder hockey player, Kevin Powell, who according to hockeydb played for Ohio State:

Date Signed Jul 29, 2002

Comments:
Kevin was such a good guy..I only knew him because he played hockey here in Wichita for the Thunder..He was such a great player, He was like and ice angle, Rest in Peace KP..#14

It took a while to figure it out, but I think "like and ice angle" should be "like an ice angel". Poor spelling will fit in well at RPI. :D

Clarkson has done a great job of building a competitive team in a short period of time. Like RPI they were surprisingly strong even in their first year, and now they should have almost a full team of scholarship players. Looking at RPI's schedule for the rest of the year, I would have to rate Clarkson as their toughest opponent. In Clarkson's first year they went 6-12-2 against D1 (excluding Sacred Heart) and 10-0-1 (the tie was vs. RPI) against D3 (including Sacred Heart). RPI's first year is shaping up to be an even stronger start than Clarkson's first season, but the impressive thing about Clarkson's was that they did it from scratch, whereas RPI started with a strong D3 team. In retrospect, considering that the top ECAC teams are weakened this year by having their top players on the olympic teams, RPI could have dispensed with the one year as an Independent and been competitive in most conference games. It certainly looks like teams such as Dartmouth and Brown are struggling a little in the early going.

There apparently is more when you Google Allysen Weidner's name...Shattuck was at U19 Nationals in Colorado. See the USA Hockey article. They won National Championship.

Anybody see the Elmira game? Sounds like the Engineers must have played well but it must have been a little uncomfortable going into the third scoreless. It looks like Elmira is one of the stronger D3 teams again this year, based on how they handled Manhattanville last night.

Nice to see the balance on this year's RPI team: lots of players getting points. And just a reminder not to place too much emphasis on statistics: I have seen 4 of RPI's games this year, and it is quite clear to me that one of the strongest contributors on this team is Ellen Mcnamara. The defence pairing of Mcnamara and Guillemette is a joy to watch, especially on the PP.

I went to the game today.

RPI controled the play all game except for a Elimra run in the late first and middle of the second. The Elmira lone goal was soft and came on a good individual effort by the Elmira player and a bad RPI turnover.

The game kind of liked back to a few years ago when a good RPI D-III team would just dominate the ice against the middle/lower level D-III teams. But the difference was that this was a very good D-III team.

This was my first game of the year and I did notice a few things. First where is Allison Malcom? She is an Assistant Captain but was not playing. Also several of the multi year D-III players got a lot less playing time. The only ones getting significant playing time were Schiff, Welte, Daniels, and Rabatin. And even though she has 4 goals and 6 assists, Welte looks very slow compared to the level of play the team is at now.

The crop of freshman is really good. As someone said, with another year of D-I recruits and Aho coming back, they should be definitely competitive middle of the pack team in the ECACHL next year.

I initially saw this, checked them out, and kinda scoffed a little. I thought they were doing a good job of beating teams that they ostensibly should have been beating. Their win over Providence raised an eyebrow, but what they did today raised both of them and dropped my jaw.

Allison suffered a bad knee injury in the series against Colgate. I haven't heard a recent report on her prospects for recovering and getting back into th line-up.

And even though she has 4 goals and 6 assists, Welte looks very slow compared to the level of play the team is at now. This isn't surprising. We are able to attract a better quality of player now that we are D-I. The fact that some of the upperclassmen are now able to contribute at the D-I level is a big plus because it means that the team will not be concentrated all in one class. That is the problem that schools like Clarkson and BU may have. Remember Niagara's original men's team? They went to the NCAA Tourney when their original recruits were Seniors and then fell off the cliff the following year.
