View Full Version : RPI Women's Hockey
My understanding is that this was not Etobicoke's PWHL team, but their intermediate or midget team, which does make the RPI loss a little surprising. However, I remember watching RPI play a team of similar or even lower calibre about this time last year and it was without question the worst game I have seen them play over about four years of watching. With all the new faces this year we probably shouldn't put too much stock in the results of the first exhibition. This weekend against Sacred Heart may be more of challenge than we had expected, however, as I see that SH tied Vermont last weekend.

I think it was their PWHL Intermediate team.
Maybe it was Etobicoke's PWHL team. I notice that they lost their first league game yesterday 7-0, to a team that had previously lost both their previous games by a combined score of 8-1.

Was anyone actually there who can provide insight??
I was their for the entire game. The Women' have infact only been practicing for a week, it showed, but there was progression throughout the game. Give them this week to finish up practices and they'll be ready come Saturday evening against Sacred Heart. No one was upset over the scrimmage, everyone viewed it as a learning experience.
I hope to see a large crowd at the game on Saturday evening. 7PM be there or be square.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY SET TO MAKE DEBUT
Engineers to play first game as Division I program on Saturday
TROY, NY The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's ice hockey team begins its season this Saturday night, marking the first-ever game for the team as a Division I program. The Engineers, who host Sacred Heart University at the Houston Field House beginning at 7pm, played at the Division III level for ten years before elevating to Division I this season.
"This is a tremendous time in athletics at Rensselaer," said Director of Athletics Ken Ralph. "Saturday's game culminates a great deal of planning and hard work, beginning with Bill Cahill's vision several years ago. We took the right steps to get to Division I and are ready to compete on the highest level in the sport."
Rensselaer, which is coached by John Burke, will play as a Division I independent this year before joining the highly competitive ECAC Hockey League for the 2006-07 season.
"We are excited to compete at Division I," said Burke, who is in his third year. "We have been working hard in preparation for this year and are really looking forward to the challenges."
The Engineers feature six seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and nine freshmen. By position, there are 11 forwards, seven defensemen and three goaltenders. Serving as the team's captain is junior forward Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins). Senior defenseman Allison Malcolm (Lyme, NH) and senior forward Katie Temple (Rochester, MI/University of Wisconsin) are the assistant captains.
Daniel is the top returning scorer from the 2004-05 team that set the school record for wins in a season, finishing 21-6-0. In 27 games, she had 16 goals and 15 assists for 31 points all of which were second on the team. Also back are the team's third and fourth leading scorers in forwards Kari Rabatin (Brookhaven, NY/Tabor Academy) and Brooke Thompson (Rochester, NY/Rochester Edge). Rabatin, a senior, had 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists) while Thompson, a sophomore, notched 11 goals and a team-best 16 assists for 27 points.
In goal, senior Rosina Schiff (St. Louis, MO/Jefferson High), a two-time All-League selection and last year's ECAC East Goaltender of the Year, returns. In 19 games as a junior, she was 13-6-0 with a 1.63 goals against average and a .927 save percentage.
Saturday night's game and all RPI women's hockey games is free and open to the public. It will be broadcast live on WRPI, 91.5 FM, and www.wrpi.org. Rensselaer and Sacred Heart are right back in action on Sunday when they face off at 2pm at the Field House.

It was the Etobicoke team who play in the PWHL and yes they did return home and came out on the wrong end of a 7-0 score. They will likely not loose like that again this season. Also the team that beat them has seemingly found their stride and Played the defending Canadian University champs to a 2-2 draw. Laurier was without a couple of their top players but a good result by Mississauga.
Big night for RPI womens hockey! Their first ever game as a D1 team. The game is being broadcast on www.wrpi.org . The RPI pep band is at the game and in fine form, and hopefully a good crowd to kick off the season.
RPI outshoots Sacred Heart 18-2 in the first period but can't find the back of the net!

The team demolished Sacred Heart in their second matchup of the weekend, winning 11-1. Next weekend is a home-and-away series against Colgate. Should be interesting to see how they fair against a future league opponent.
Still, it's nice to be able to say we're undefeated after our first two Division I games ever. :-)

Hard to believe it's been two years already.
That weekend was for you, Bill.

Comparing box scores, RPI dominated SHU significantly more than last year. A good sign.

RPI In my opinion is ready to make the jump and compete, as they were a solid Division 3 team last year. Because I live in Connecticut, I am familar with SHU. They have an awful long way to go. RPI really damaged them, and choked them off real well. Great start. I just do not know how SHU will manage, they really do not have much in the way of Division 1 players. Panella and Turbert are pretty solid but after that it looks bleak. I thought they should have went Division 3 to start, where incidently they would probably struggle there too, but build it a little before jumping into Division 1

What about that hockey recruit you mentioned.
You did not reply when previously asked ??
If you are the insider then what are the chances of her attending RPI.
I hear they are pretty good. But I do not claim to be the insider.

They did play D3 in the ECAC East although they couldn't qualify for post-season because the school itself is D1.

Well at this time, I am not at liberty to disclose any "inside" information regarding the team.

Anyone making the trip to Hamilton for tonights game? I'm gonna try to be there although I may be there late as I will be in Cooperstown until almost 6. Maybe we can set up a meet and greet?
I hope to be there tonight, as well as back in Troy for the Saturday game, and in Pittsburgh next weekend for the Robert Morris games.

I predict that RPI will not score a goal this weekend. Have a nice day.

Do not have a rooting interest either way, however, my opinion is, that it will be closer than people think, and may bear out that there really is not that big a difference between some of the stronger Division 3 programs and some of the Division 1 middle of the pack teams. Should be a good indicator of that.
