View Full Version : RPI Women's Hockey
Excellent news re: Nicole McDonald. Playing as an 18 year old in the NWHL should make her very comfortable with the competition and style of play in D1. Now if we could add four or five more of that calibre I might have to revise my outlook for next year. :D . It has been a long anxious wait for this first announcement, but this is at least one good sign that all the hard work and many miles logged by Burke and Youlin will pay off.
Found some news on one of the new RPI recruits, and also have heard some bits and pieces of info from the team awards banquet. First, the recruit is Melanie Guillemette, Defense, Stoney Creek Junior Sabres of the Provincial Womens Hockey League (Ontario). Her bio info, and the reference to attending RPI, can be found at http://www3.sympatico.ca/diane.boles/guillemette.htm
Some of the awards info from the banquet (I hope I have this right, but if anyone has heard anything different, please correct);
Staunton award for contributions to the team:Allie Cooper
MVP: Sarah Daniel
Character award: Lane Dielwart and Paula Durham
Most Improved: Jen Onksen
Scholar / Athlete: Sarah Daniel
Captains for next year: Captain Sarah Daniel (is this the first time they have gone with a junior?); Assistant Captains, Katie Temple and Allison Malcolm.

I noticed that the Stoney Creek Junior Sabres played in a Tourney at Union last September. That probably is where the RPI coaches made contact with Melanie Guillemette. http://www3.sympatico.ca/diane.boles/schedulepage.htm
Ms. Guillemette was also a member of Team Ontario Blue for the National Under-18 Championships. She posted no goals or assists in 4 games. So we have two recruits so far that were selected for that prestigious tournament (Ms. MacDonald, Ontario Red).
Mel Guillemette seems like another solid recruit. She plays in a competitive league and is obviously not out of place with the best under 18 talent in Canada. Her biography also indicates she's athletic outside of hockey, which certainly can't hurt.
So now we know of a forward and a defenseman coming to the 'Tute. Let's hope we have a few more offensive-minded forwards coming in and some D that can rush the puck up the ice and play tough defense.
Congrats to Sarah Daniel on earning the C (assumingly)!!

I noticed that there is an Ann-Renée Guillemette on Yale's roster who is from North Bay as is Melanie Guillemette. Are they sisters?
I would think so. Here's a link to her page on Yale's site.

They look a lot alike.

Will there be an end to the multi-sport athletes re: women's hockey @ RPI this year?
I know that for DI football, if you play on the football team, the ONLY athletic scholarship you can receive is for football. (however, this is a poor example as you ARE still allowed to play on other DI sports as a 'walk-on'... just pointing out that there is SOME sort of regulation on this type of activity per the NCAA)
Since RPI is now offering scholarships in women's hockey, I would think there [rightfully] would be [severe] restrictions on participating in other DIII sports.
This is just speculation - anyone have any info?

As far as football, a lot of that has to do with it being a year round sport, what with spring practices for six weeks, and weight training and conditioning kicking into gear two days after the "season" is over.
Several of my female friends who played D1 hockey also played softball and lacrosse while in college. And I dated a girl who was on a full ride and played both field hockey and lacrosse. So I think that it depends on whether it conflicts with a principal sport, or if as part of your scholarship you are dissuaded from playing another sport lest you become injured. (Isn't that what happened to Tara Mounsey while at Brown? Didn't she get hurt playing field hockey?)

Since RPI is a DIII school playing DI hockey, scholarship hockey players won't be able to play another sport.
Someone posted on the RPI men's off-season thread that Julie Aho has quit the team. Does anyone know if this is true? She certainly appears to have the talent to play DI, perhaps not as the star of the team anymore, but certainly as a contributing player.

Wow conspiracy theories, eh?! Stetem, I am curious as to how you would have such information??
Anyhow, she has not quit nor is she transfering schools...she is simply taking next year to go on Co-op. Unfortunately for the team this is a common thing at RPI and Julie has said in the past that her choice to attend RPI was based on academics as much as (if not more than) hockey...so she is taking the route of many of her fellow engineers and getting work experience early.
Hope that clears up the rumor mill....

Hope that clears up the rumor mill.... Thanks for the info. Good to hear that she is going on a coop assignment, hopefully in an area where she can get icetime.
Which other women have taken off a year for a coop assignment recently?

I know a lot of engineers end up going on Co-op with GE at one of their various plants in the area. I thought Aho was an STS major, though. Guess not... RPI stalk-a-student says Mech-E.

Maj Nixon and Andrea Wadman are the only ones I can recall who have gone on co-op during season. There were probably others but those two are the only ones I can remember off-hand.
As for location of her co-op I have no information on that, sorry.
Stetem - I wouldn't expect you to name names, I was more asking about if this was direct knowledge or a rumor of a rumor (and it seems it's the latter) :D

stetem, perhaps it would be better if you didn't preface your rumor-mongering with "BUT I DO KNOW." The original rumor was at least identified as such. At first you said you know, then you admitted it was just a rumor, and an uncorroborated one at that. Therefore, you do not know.

I received the following as an email. Hopefully, it wasn't meant to be secret. (AOL regarded as spam for some unknown reason.)
Emily Ford Goalie Tabor Academy 2005 also was goalie for the Assabet Red U-19 who were in the Nationals. She will be attending RPI this fall.
Looks like the Assabet Red team, with Ford playing all five games, finished with 2 wins, 2 losses, and a tie in the Nationals, with both losses at the hands of National Champs Shattucks 3-1 and 4-2. Ford had a GAA of 2.54 and save percentage of .860. Has anyone seen her play and care to offer comments as to how she might fare in D1 hockey? I'm glad to see that one of RPI's recruits is a goalie to share duties with Schiff, because they are going to see a lot of pucks over the next two years.
