I suspect I will be one of two spectators in the HFH tomorrow due to weather (jericho being the other).

Teenage college-punk w/ yellow Georgia Tech Ice Hockey hat if you want to say Hi, though I'm kind of tied up during intermissions.

I was there yesterday (but forgot to check here before going) and I'm planning on showing up today too. Shaved head, goatee, red RPI hooded sweatshirt (probably with headphones on listening to WRPI)

The blizzard - as it's being called - has started. I'm in the Union, looking out at RSE, and seeing mostly white. I think I'll start the trek up to the Field House now. Remember this game's on WRPI for those fortunate enough to have the sense I didn't, which is to say those who are staying home today.

Go RPI!

Hey MR. ITTY. Sorry, I didn't get across the ice to say hi. I was chatting with HAB and his wife (He pointed you out to me) and then the game was about to start. After I saw how flat NEC was, I lost some of my energy. Then when the 2nd goal was high sticked in (the broadcasters were saying it was gloved but from my angle it looked like a high stick, the linesman called it a high stick and motioned it but I think Demarte was trying to keep his balance on his skates and wasn't watching) and the refs allowed it I lost my cool and decided to target the ref who couldn't keep up with the girls. Unfortunately I think that put the fork in NEC for the afternoon. It was not a pleasant drive home, how much snow did you end up getting?

The only person I saw wearing a yellow baseball cap was doing the color commentary on the broadcast. Was that you? Sorry, I didn't get to say hi.

Glad to hear you made it home safely NECDAD. Troy ended up getting about a foot of snow. I thought NEC played a couple of good games but probably not quite as strong on Saturday. But I thought the big difference was they faced a much more focussed RPI team in the second game...very solid checking game that gave Schiff a very easy night in net. At the other end, your keeper made a number of great stops from point blank range. Wouldn't be surprised to see NEC come on strong in the playoffs.

Yep, that chump was me.

(BTW, I'd put my money on that 2nd goal having definitely been gloved in.:))

That was indeed the one and only Kyle. I was doing play by play.

From ecachockeyleague.com...

ECAC Hockey League's Gilligan and Cahill Named Winners of AHCA Awards for 2005
The major American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) award winners for 2005 have been announced. Former Vermont men's coach Mike Gilligan, and former Rensselaer women's head coach/RPI men's assistant coach Bill Cahill are among those being honored.

...

Cahill's involvement with women's ice hockey was tremendous over his years in the game, not just at the collegiate level, but at camps and clinics throughout the country. All of hockey lost a great ambassador for the game when he died suddenly on October 5, 2003.

For his efforts with women's hockey, he is being honored with the Joe Burke Award, which is "presented annually to the person who has given outstanding contribution, support, and dedication to women's ice hockey.'

A native of Worcester, Mass., Cahill played his college hockey at Norwich University, before entering coaching at the junior and high school level.

He compiled a 7-year record of 112-26-16 at St. John's of Shrewsbury (Mass.) High School before beginning a college career with Assumption, Norwich, and Rensselaer. At RPI, he was a men's assistant for many years before taking the helm of the women's team. He had a three year mark of 47-28-3 with the RPI women and became a huge advocate of women's hockey.

Said MIT coach Julie Sasner, in nominating Cahill for this award: "Bill had a genuine passion for the game of hockey and loved to talk about the game as much as he loved coaching. He was supportive of all hockey, men's and women's, girl's and boy's, and not just his own team. He would talk the ears off of anyone who would listen to his ideas about drills and systems. He was a friend to anyone who loved the game of hockey.

"Bill was a true friend and the kind of guy who loved moving the salt and pepper shakers around to demonstrate a forecheck after you played his team. He was generous with his time and knowledge. Few people could match Bill's tremendous enthusiasm for the game. His early passing is a huge loss to the hockey community."

All awards, except the Joe Burke Award, will be presented at the Coach of the Year Banquet in Naples, FL, on April 23, 2005. The Joe Burke Award will be presented at a special reception for women's hockey coaches on Wednesday, April 20, also at Naples, Fla.

Congrats, Bill. RIP.

Does anyone know what the women's schedule will look like for the 2005-6 season?
This is the "independent" year. I don't know anything for sure, but I believe as far as D-III teams are concerned, we're likely to see Elmira, Manhattanville, Plattsburgh, and Middlebury, all probably at home. We're probably going to see a home-and-home with Union, and possibly with Clarkson. I'd expect to see games against Cornell and maybe Colgate as well, along with Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac. A higher end ECAC team like Princeton or Brown probably wouldn't be out of the question either, but teams like Harvard or Dartmouth are probably unlikely. In Hockey East, BU will also be in their first year at D-I, so I'd put money on seeing them. Possibly games against UConn, Boston College, or Northeastern.

I've heard it rumored that they might go on a western trip as part of an establishment plan. My guess is that it might be Englestad Arena against a similarly emerging North Dakota team which is similar to RPI in its late arrival to women's hockey with a long, profound history in the men's game as a small school.

That's my best guess.

It'll be an interesting hodge podge schedule for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing how much of an impact the first D1 recruiting class will have when playing against the top D3 teams and the lower-level D1 teams. The timing seems to be perfect also given the large (7 or 8 players) Senior class that is graduating this year.

On a side note, I wouldn't be surpprised to see Yale on the schedule next year given that RPI has played them a few times in past years.

That's my best guess. I had similar thoughts although North Dakota didn't cross my mind. They are probably a likely candidate if we go west. I also expected a North Country trip even though SLU is out of our class. We did play them a couple of times in the last decade.

I do wonder how the schedule will reach 34 games as I don't expect any games against the poorer teams in the ECAC-East.

Ralph / RPIRED - Any possibility of playing Canadian University teams?

If they are struggling to fill out the schedule, why not? I doubt that they will be too concerned next season that the games won't count for NCAA Tournament purposes because DIII teams won't either, and I agree that we will see several of those on the schedule.

Exactly Ralph, the CIS (I think that's the acronym) teams aren't usually good competition for top D1 teams but it would be a good challenge for a fledgling D1 team.
