RPI Press release:
SCHIFF & AHO NAMED PRE-SEASON ALL-AMERICANS
USCHO.com selects student-athletes for women's ice hockey honors
The USCHO.com Division III National Preseason All-Americans have been announced and two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been recognized. Junior goaltender Rosina Schiff was named to the Second Team while sophomore forward Julie Aho was chosen as an Honorable Mention.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schiff is coming off a season in which she posted an 11-5-2 record with a 1.33 goals against average and a .952 save percentage in 18 games. She had five shutouts and ranked among the leaders in the entire nation in save percentage (2nd) and goals against average (8th). She was selected to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East First Team as well as to the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA)/JOFA National All-American First Team. Schiff was also selected as the team's Most Valuable Player.
The ECAC East Goaltender of the Week three times and the USCHO.com Division III National Women's Defensive Player of the Week once during the season, she was 7-3-1 with a 1.08 average and a .955 percentage in 11 league games.
As a sophomore, Schiff posted a 7-4-0 overall record with a 1.38 goals against average and an NCAA Division III-leading save percentage of .948. The Jefferson High School graduate also posted three shutouts in being named to the ECAC East All-Rookie Team. In 32 career games, Schiff is 18-9-2 with a 1.35 goals against average and a .951 save percentage. The management major has eight shutouts in her tenure.
Aho was an All-ECAC East Second Team selection after leading the Engineers in goals (18), including a team-best five on the power play, and points (32) in 25 regular season contests in 2003-04. The mechanical engineering major from Ann Arbor, Mich., was second on the team in assists with 14. Aho, who played scholastically at Saline High School, had at least one point in 19 games and multiple points in eight contests, including a five-point effort. She was the ECAC East Rookie of the Week four times and the league's Player of the Week once during the season.
Rensselaer, which was 19-5-3 overall (13-3-1 in the ECAC East) and advanced to the ECAC East Tournament Finals last season, opens on October 30 at Union College in a non-league game (2pm). The Engineers, who are playing their final season at Division III before elevating to Division I, will play their first home game on November 13 against UMass Boston at 7pm at the Houston Field House.
Apparently the Engineers do have a scrimmage lined up for Saturday at 5 at the HFH, but it isn't against the Toronto Aeros Intermediate team that is playing Princeton and Cornell that weekend. Instead, they will be playing a Tier 1 Midget team from Toronto, the Willowdale Red Wings. Should still be a good test for RPI and an opportunity to get a first look at this year's team.

Did reports on the scrimmage?
The Engineers played Willowdale Red Wings, a tier 1 Midget team from Toronto, a team that I think they would have little trouble with in mid-season, but this was the first game situation for the team this year and it certainly showed. Red Wings won 3-0, as the Engineers teamwork was almost non-existent. Few decent passing rushes and the players were not cycling in the corners at all. At least it shows them what to work on, but unfortunately a week isn't much time to prepare for Union. Most encouraging sign from the freshmen was the play of Ellen McNamara on defence.

Thanks, hab. My question, of course, should have read "Any reports on the scrimmage?"
I caught the first two periods and I have to agree with Hab, the team was very rusty. It didn't seem like there was any coordination on offense and there was some bad defensive play also. But, it was their first game action and it will take a little while before the freshman get caught up and everyone gets on the same page. The team should be fine.
Again, I have to agree with Hab that McNamara stood out in a big way. Great skater, nice shot, should make an impact right away. Other freshman that I thought played well are Kelly Barbara and Brooke Thompson. Actually I believe McNamara and Barbera were paired together for much of the game.

Did anybody see the Union game? What is the analysis?
Did anybody see the Union game? What is the analysis?
I didn't see the game but checked out the stats (and the game-tracker) and talked to someone who was at the game. Sounds like the play was quite even, RPI had a slight shot advantage and played a lot better than they played at last week's scrimmage, but gave up a couple power play goals including a 5 on 3. RPI doesn't seem to have found the right line combinations to generate much offence yet. About half their shots (and their only goal) came from the Defence, and almost all of the shots by forwards were from two players, Daniel and Aho. I too, would like to hear a first hand report from anyone who attended.

There must have been someone at the last couple of games. A 4-2 win over St. Anselm doesn't look too good considering where they were picked in the pre-season poll. Have they been underrated? How do the two newest teams in the ECAC East look?

JULIE AHO NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ECAC East recognizes Rensselaer student-athlete
The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East has selected Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Julie Aho as its first Player of the Week in women's hockey for the 2004-05 season. The sophomore forward had hat tricks in two games to lead RPI to a pair of victories.
In an 8-0 win at Castleton St. on Friday night, Aho tallied two even-strength goals and a power play marker. The next afternoon, the Ann Arbor, Mich., native scored three more times, including a short-handed tally, in a 4-2 win at St. Anselm.
Through four games this season, Aho has six goals and an assist for a team-high seven points. Among her goals are a power play goal, a shorthanded tally and a game-winner. She also has two penalties for four minutes.
A USCHO.com Preseason All-American Honorable Mention, Aho was an All-ECAC East Second Team selection after leading the Engineers in goals (18), including a team-best five on the power play, and points (32) in 25 regular season contests in 2003-04. The mechanical engineering major was second in assists with 14. Aho, who played scholastically at Saline High School, had at least one point in 19 games and multiple points in eight contests, including a five-point effort. She was the ECAC East Rookie of the Week four times and the league's Player of the Week once during the season.
The ninth-ranked Engineers, who are 3-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the ECAC East, will make their home debut on Saturday night at 7pm against UMass Boston. Those same two teams will also play on Sunday afternoon at 3pm in a game that will be broadcast live on WRPI, 91.5 FM, and www.wrpi.org.
Stetem,
I would think so, although it was split between two goalies.
