If you want to get into comparisons...RPI also lost to Vermont who Clarkson beat and tied so RPI is not as good as Clarkson. Oh but wait, RPI tied Clarkson so they must be as good as EC if not better. Boy I just think I could take this one in circles.

If they hit the ice to play, EC would show you that they are the better team. Unfortunately that probably won't happen because, as much as I would like to see them do it, RPI won't get past Manhattanville in the East Tourney.

As someone stated in an earlier post, Seeley was "berrating" one of his players and had stormed out of the locker room. This happens when a team is playing below potential. Thats how RPI tied a game that they should have lost.

I had the opportunity to see the UVM-RPI game and the UVM - Clarkson series so perhaps I can comment on where I think RPI ranks.
- First of all, I was impressed with RPI's never-quit attitude vs UVM. They have a solid D3 team and should do very well in their division. I have to say however that RPI was never in the game. Shots on goal were 39-23 UVM's favor but RPI only had 2 shots in the first period and half of their shots came in the 3rd on 3 consecutive power plays. UVM controlled the play throughout while skating 5 on5 but their own continued lack of a decent power play (3-39 on the season) helped keep the score relatively close. I was impressed with Julie Aho - a fine player at any level.
- Concerning Clarkson. They tied UVM 1-1 and won 1-0. I would rate those 2 teams dead even. Clarkson had the better play in game 1 while UVM dominated game 2. I feel UVM has better balance across their top 3 lines while Clarkson relies solely on the 1st line (a very good one by the way) to get he job done.
- I was surprised to see RPI-Clarkson tie. I really feel Clarkson is the better team (note shots on goal 48-12) but these things happen and congratulations to RPI for hanging in there.

It should be noted that both teams were playing their third game in as many days, and that RPI had rested some of their better players against MIT in anticipation of the Clarkson game.

Great effort by RPI against Clarkson. The first period was dead even. I remember chatting with someone during the first period and commenting that Clarkson didn't look too awfully impressive. The second and third periods were a completely different matter. Clarkson really started skating and dominated in terms of territory. Some of that was because RPI was winning but a lot of it was because it was simply a D1 team playing against a D3 team.

Regardless though, it was a gritty, gutty performance by RPI and they should be more than prepared to face the rest of the D3 schedule.

Also, good to see Dougherty stepping up. Her goal against Clarkson was pretty. I was wondering where her production went. If Aho, Welte, Langille keep it up and Daniel, Temple, Woodard and Dougherty step it up, RPI could be tough for even the elite D3 teams.

In looking at the MIT box score, it looked like the big guns were on the ice the whole game, ie: scoring in the 1st period and a couple more in the 3rd period. Did you mean by the resting comment that RPI played more lines than usual thereby decreasing the top players ice time? If so, how many lines does RPI usually play? Do they shorten the bench vs a UVM or Clarkson?

I went to both the Clarkson and MIT games. RPI has so many players it's hard to keep track of them all.

I don't remember Katie Woodward playing against MIT. She's one of the better players. I don't remember Onksen playing either. Basically a lot of players that don't normally get a lot of time played so the normal distribution of playing time was off. Believe me, if RPI played normal lines and players the score would have been much more lopsided. It was good experience for the players that don't get much ice time.

I'm pretty sure RPI played all four lines against Clarkson. I'd say the top two lines got the majority of time but the other two got their share.

I know Dielwart was also not playing, and I don't think Maj Nixon was either, though I could be wrong about that.

I guess Coach Burke went ahead and counted MIT as a win before the game started and rested them to be ready for Clarkson, which was a good move in my book - at least MIT is to the point where everyone on their team can skate well, not a knock against them, they're just still pretty bad.

I just wanted to make a post for no reason, because I hate the number 13 and that's the number of posts I had until this one. Good luck this weekend, girls.

So that's why I saw the MIT girls at both the Vermont and Dartmouth games this weekend... MIT apparently played against the Russell Sage club team at the Field House last Sunday, winning 7-1. Oddly enough, the Sage goalie is a girl who graduate from my high school... where we don't even have men's hockey... :o

She could have played in a boys house program in the area. TAYHA is pretty big organization and has house team all the way to the miget level. Then again, she could have been the last one to show up for tryouts and got handed the goalie pads

Engineers beat St. Mike's 8-1 yesterday and the puck is about to drop on the second game of the series.

Just a reminder that the RPI-Wesleyan game will air on WRPI tomorrow. In case you don't know the website by now, it's www.wrpi.org

Not much to say about the RPI / Wesleyan game last night as RPI dominated throughout. The Aho - Welte - Langille accounted for 6 of the 8 goals for RPI. I keep saying it but Aho is the best player I've ever seen play for RPI (aside from RPI_fan03 of course!;))

So next up is Quinnipiac and then two games with Southern Maine. The team will be hard-pressed to stay with Q but should rebound with a sweep against So. Maine. RPI teams of the past have usually had a tough time with So. Maine but I just think SM lost too much talent.

Being a Connecticut person, my opinion, on RPI-Quinnipiac- Is I think Quinnipiac is vastly overrated, and is still a D-3 Level club- improving though for sure.... But I think good goaltending, no great goaltending by RPI make it a closer game, perhaps even RPI steals one-
Gallagher is a offensive threat at Q--- but their team defense is in question in my opinion

That's why Quinnipiac is playing a lot of DIII schools.
They have to upgrade their program before they join the CHA or else it will make for some very long road trips next year.

This will truly be a test of how well the Engineers can work as a team...Q is in the middle of the pack as far as the caliber of D1 teams RPI is playing/has played...so it should be a good game. If the Engineers can communicate well on the ice and play true "team defense" when they are without the puck (remember kids, PC=O but NPC=D) they should do well. Scoring is obviously not a problem...so if they can be strong defensively then the opportunities will increase and I am positive that this team can capitalize on them.

PS- thanks leeb...whoever you are:-D

Looking at their record so far, I think that people may be selling Quinnipiac a bit short: clearly they are not a strong Div 1 team but I think that even the best Div 3 team would be stretched to beat them. I wish RPI luck this weekend, but based on how Q and RPI have fared against common opponents this year, Q has to be a strong favorite. Against the three new Div 1 teams, they destroyed two of them (6-0 vs. Union and 10-0 vs Sacred Heart,) and beat Clarkson by 2, for an average goal differential of +6. Against the same three teams RPI tied two of them and beat SH by 3, for an average goal diffential of +1. So I would expect Q to win by about 5. But RPI Fan is right: a hot goalie and strong team play could change all that. Playing against Div 1 teams seems to bring out the best in RPI. Wish I could see the game.

RPI's surprising win over Div 1 Quinnipiac (2-1) means that they complete their season against Div 1 with a winning record: 2 wins, 2 ties and only one loss. What a great start to the year! Before the season started I predicted they would beat Union and Sacred Heart but lose 3 "not-so-close" games to Vermont, Clarkson, and Quinnipiac, but they certainly outperformed relative to my expectations. After a slightly disappointing starting tie against Union, they lost by 3 to Vermont, beat Sacred Heart by 3, and then tied a strong Clarkson team and beat Quinnipiac. Rosina Schiff was in net again tonight, and looking at the shot totals she must have had another standout game. John Burke must be feeling pretty comfortable in his first few weeks behind the bench.:D

Engineers back in action this weekend, Saturday and Sunday against Southern Maine. Both games are at 3pm.
