I understand that, that's what they were in the box score, but I don't believe those are accurate, just like there's no way BC outshot UNH the other night 24-15 or whatever it was in men's hockey..

Right, I know.... but the goal judges and press box workers seem to be fairly accurate 95% of the time, so I dunno.

at UNH, I know the goal judges signal when a save was made, or if it was wide/high (no shot), but I've never seen that any other place. It's more up to the people up in the box, and in my opinion last night wasn't accurate, and Tuesday at BC was AWFUL as far as keeping track of shots (UNH had 11 shots after 2 on the board, then they 'corrected it' to 15 before the 3rd.. and then they only end up with 15 total?)

Well at least they did a better job at keeping track of the actual score :p

That's true, but you never know with them. I did get pelted with ice after the OT goal

The box statistics are not accurate. I have three players that play in three different conferences one in each division. Someone may be doing their best but stats like shots on goal are the least accurate. This is followed by +/-, and asissts. I have never complained because it seems to be the standard.
PS No one plays Div I Male. Maybe they keep accurate stats there.

3-3 OT at Ohio State. Wisconsin only managed 10 shots. This has GOT to move UNH ahead of Wisconsin in the polls next week...

It depends on where the games are. Each school has their own stat crew. Some are good, some seem like they're watching the game on a portable 4" TV, but the only things that really matter are W's and L's!

Grandaddy you are right on. Hockey is a team sport. Sometimes we lose sight of the single goal to win. Stats are small comfort. Leaving everything on the ice is where its at.

UNH overall didnt look as good tonight as I have seen them look in the past. Huggon made some big saves to preserve the 1-0 win.
Offensively the wildcats looked a bit shaky compared to the second princeton game, not as solid.
Any comments on the game?
Does anyone have any insight or comments on the question posted earlier regarding Goulet and Stefanilo playing/not playing on Defense ?
Thanks !

This is a coaching decision, not due to any injury. The coaching staff just feels that other players are at the point where they can contribute more than Stefanilo.
Whatever coach is doing seems to be working.... it's unfortunate some have to sit, but I trust he's making the correct calls on who plays vs. the correct opponent thus far.
I agree...shot count for the most part is not accurate!!!
Have been to several games where they have done a poor job of shot count......
Not everyone knows what counts as a shot...for instance if it hits the pipe it's NOT a shot, or if the goalie catches a shot that isn't on net, it's NOT a shot. Sooooooooooooo..
it depends on who is keeping the shot record and their knowledge of the game.
These are volunteers most likely, which are needed, but they should be educated on the game.
I guess the only thing you can rely on is
Win/Losses, Goals for/Goals against and Penaties.
....after that it can be a bit sketchy.:(

Especially in the case of the U of Vermont volunteer who sits behind the opposing team net.......who may ask, "once again, what does a shot on goal look like?":D

no matter how great the wildcats have done thus far under mccloskey, IMO i hesitate to agree with his cutting of stefanilos ice time. she has been such an integral part of the defense at UNH for the past three seasons and has been the best actual defenseman at keeping the puck out of the net. Goulet definately has the speed over stefanilo but from what i saw v. princeton and NU, stefanilo makes less defensive mistakes. this coaching decision is one that is based on speed but what stefanilo lacks in speed she makes up for in many other ways defensively- not to mention that she isnt the fastest on the team but she isnt that slow either. Janine of course is more offensive but i would expect that from somebody who is a forward. this has happened to stefanilo before though under kay. coach kay always seemed to go to other defensemen more once the team got into a streak and stefanilo saw less ice. kay made changes for speed and it usually backfired. the last 2 seasons the wildcats would skid and in the end, it was stefanilo who kept the puck out of the net and come playoff time she saw the ice just as much as anybody else and they went back to her. it will be interesting to see what comes of this because stefanilo had been seeing alot of ice prior to the second princeton game. i dont think that they won that second game by so much because of a little less time from stefanilo. plus, v. NU the other night, they could have used her solid defense on the ice more than she was IMO.

Not sure at all, but when i was at the 2nd princeton game, someone said she got shaken up in the first game, but it was 2nd hand info, not sure how reliable!

to settle our earlier discussion of stefanilo- she was back in the lineup consitantly v. niagara this past weekend and played every other shift down the stretch in saturdays game. she looked more aggressive and a step quicker than before the princeton series when she was playing consistantly.

it was good to see UNH produce 7 goals v. niagara in saturdays matchup. last season, if a team scored 4 goals against the cats- UNH lost the game.
this weekend v. connecticut is crucial. if you remember it was the huskies last season that beat the wildcats at the whitt and from that point of breaking the streak, UNH fell from #2 in the polls all the way out of them completely. CT isnt that consistant or strong this year but they beat northeastern and tied providence this past weekend so if UNH has a let down, the huskies can make them pay.
in the national scene, i think that harvard, duluth, and minne have established themselves as the dominant forces but brown being able to tie duluth and only fall to harvard by one is a good sign for other teams that the top 3 are beatable. wisconsin was also able to tie duluth and play a couple tight ones with minne. and the fourth spot is wide open between UNH, SLU, prov., dart, and brown
UNH's goal should be to win hockey east, but a spot in the frozen four doesnt look totally out of the question. games with dart and harvard in 2 weeks will tell us alot

i have a question...
i think jen huggon is a very solid goaltender but after watching the niagara games this weekend i started to wonder if she hasnt benefited from an extremely strong defense more than people realize? unh defense keeps the shots down. in 14 games, huggon has only had to make 20+ saves in five of them and she has never had to make 30+ yet this season and four have been 15 saves or under. she is a very capable goaltender but she does let up some soft goals sometimes and i hesitate to put her on the same level as dreyer of brown or gunn of northeastern. dreyer has made 30+ saves in 4 games out of ten and made 48 against harvard, 37 v. UMD. there is no question that she keeps brown close against the top teams- with anyhting less, the bears would be losing by alot more. and gunn of northeastern is also making 37 saves v. wisconsin, 25 v. wisconsin, and 37 v. slu.
it seems like the wildcats have the offense this season to pull out the games, unlike last year, but letting up 4 goals to niagara on twenty shots isnt that impressive, neither is three goals to quinnipiac on 13, or four goals to osu on 17 shots.
it appears that it will be unh's newly found offensive power and extremely strong defensive core that will keep them competitive with the top teams rather than the goaltending. huggon is good but i havent seen excellent and im not sure if she can put up the same numbers as gunn or dreyer, but maybe she wont have to.
what do you think- where would you rank huggon?
