UNH wins 7-3

this was really an unreal performance for UNH, especially in the first period.

mccloskey and co. made a lot of adjustments to counter a more physical princeton team, and his team came out and out-played princeton in every facet of the game. shots after one period were 23-3. princeton played a very undisciplined forecheck, with the D pinching down on the boards but nobody supporting the spot on the ice she had vacated...the UNH wings were just chipping the puck past the D and going down ice 2-1 and 3-1....without excellent goaltending from vanbeusekom the score could have been 5 or 6 to 0 after the first period...as it was they escaped the first 2-0, and nearly 1-0 if not for a late goal. princeton made it 2-1 early in the 2nd, but UNH scored the next 3 to go into the 3rd up 5-1.

huggon wasnt particularly sharp, and last season, UNH might have lost this game.

kaip (3), jones, gordon, fahlenbock, and hanson scored the goals. kaip also had an assist and vicki davis had 3 or 4 assists as well

shots were ~45-20 in favor of UNH.

wow...7-3. i dont really know how to reply to this. after seeing 2-1OT for UNH yesterday i never expected to see a 7-3 win for the wildcats. thanks DBBC for your commentary on the game.
i posted earlier this week that i thought this princeton series would be a real test of what mccloskey has added to this program. UNH suffered its first loss last weekend at St.lawrence in a really close game. Last season, the cats had an incredibly strong start but as soon as they lost one and the streak was broken, they never recovered. i am psyched to see UNH not only come out on top of yesterdays OT game, evening the score with the tigers who had beaten the cats in OT in princeton last season, but this commanding 7-3 win for UNH today really shows that what mccloskey has brought to this program is effective. princeton is a legit top ten team this season and 2 wins this weekend for the wildcats is impressive. i dont want to get too excited but this is definately a step in the right direction for UNH and I feel like they will be one of the teams this year that gets better as the season goes on and makes changes neccessary to win games.

he rotated 5

to add to what you were saying, this is about the time of the season each of the last two years that things started to fall apart.

talking to one girls parents today...they told me that the consensus amongst the girls is that they've never had a coach, ever, who brings the level of preparation that mccloskey brings...taking the time to look over each game after the fact and make the necessary adjustments to come back the next night and be successful....even doing this between periods when things arent going well. the team played a great game today, and some of that credit has to go to mccloskey for making the adjustments that let his team have the best opportunity to play to their strengths and to expose princetons weaknesses

Cow,

Who were the 5 D-men who rotated...did they go without set pairings all weekend or just for the Sunday game ?

Thanks

Caught the games this weekend (great job ladies!), and he had: Thomas, Edgar, Stefanilo, Hickox and Goulet rotating out there. They did a fantastic job as a unit.

Were any of these 5 ladies paired up together throughout the weekend...or was it a matter of 5 d-men rotating as different combinations throughout the game ?

How come Jamie VanMassenhove is not playing defense...did she move up to forward (essentially swapping positions with Janine Goulet) or is she injured ?

Will Goulet now stay on defense ?

Thanks to anyone who can help answer any of these questions.

The original 'pairings' seemed to be Thomas/Edgar, Hickox/Stefanilo, Goulet/Silvestri.... I don't think Silvestri saw the ice. VanMassenhove was listed as a forward on a 4th line with Shaw and Lankton. Don't know if they saw the ice at all, but they rolled three lines I think. He made an adjustment of lines from Saturday to SUnday.... the first line Saturday was Jones/Fahlenbock/Gordon, second line was Butt/MacMaster/Bernhard, he switched MacMaster with Fahlenbock on Sunday, and the offense exploded. Kaip got a hat-trick skating with Davis and Hansen on the 3rd line, I believe...

that's from memory, don't hold me to it!

PS, If you check out the box scores on www.wildcats.com, they list the lineups from the games this past weekend at the bottom, fwiw

One last question...it looks like Alexis Silvestri has disappeared from the Defensemen mix...does anyone have any insight on her situation ?

Thanks

Good question...all I know is that Alexis Silvestri is listed in the Women's Hockey Media Guide as a defensemen...and VanMassenhove and Goulet are both listed as Forwards.

It looks like McCloskey might be trying to improve the depth of the defensive corps by converting a forward or two and adding them to the already strong foursome of Thomas-Edgar-Stafanilo-Hickox.

Alexis is currently nursing an injured (seperated) shoulder. She is practising, but is wearing a heavy brace, and decided not to test it this weekend. I think you will see her get some time (tho' it may be limited) in the coming games.

mccloskey is a smart coach and he isnt afraid to change things around as his defensive unit needs to face off against different offensive styles each week. goulet on defense this past weekend was a matter of footspeed. she is quick and mccloskey realized before hand that they might need more speed back there. after saturdays OT win, he upped her time seeing the ice even more. notice that hickox skated more than stefanilo, which isnt normally the case, and goulet saw the ice more than either of those 2. goulet is more offensive than hickox and still quick. mccloskey is good at utilizing his players for their strengths and exposing other teams weaknesses. i wouldnt say that goulet is a better defensman than stefanilo or hickox but she saw the ice more on sunday because after saturdays game of rotating the 5 through pretty evenly, mccloskey recognized the benefit to having a very fast skating offensive oriented defenseman on the unit and it worked well against princeton.
we will see what happens when silvestri is back at full strength but i wouldnt be surprised if we see goulet back there again against NU this week. she did really well and just needs more experience.

seanna conway has apparently left the UNH womens team and is now playing for Quebec in the NWHL...she started against Brampton on sunday and lost 4-1.

someone said she was still taking classes, which i find hard to believe...that would be a heck of a commute
