Just an FYI - the rule requiring all players, from ANY conference, to sit out a year when transfering from one NCAA-sanctioned school to another took effect in Women's Ice Hockey at the beginning of the 2001-02 season. Any player who was a freshman that year in now affected by this rule (meaning any player that is now going into her 3rd year). That being said, any transfer, even out of conference would be required to sit one year... (that is the reason that McManus, Misikowetz, and Pam Pachal (transfer from UMD-NU 2001-02) were not required to sit a year because they were already playing and the rule had not taken affect yet)

Thanks for the info, I wasnt aware there was a change (I like that there's a change, wasnt a big fan of people leaving and playing right away at another school...

i do not think it took effect in 2001-2002, because what about halcisak? she transferred into providence after her freshman year and was able to play as a sophomore without sitting out in the beginning of the 2001-2002 season.

Correct - but her NCAA timeclock began BEFORE the 2001-02 season, so the rule does not apply to her (called a "grandfather ruling")
I only know this because I spent my 1st year of college (2000-01) at a different school and transfered into Northeastern for the start of the 2001-02 season. I had to submit paperwork to the NCAA on this and was granted a "grandfather ruling" as well.

If this is the case, scratch the experienced transfer option. Only way to avoid sitting is if ,the goalie to be, started their college stint in 2000/2001 which would make them a senior for next year. Unless she sat out a year already, who wants to sit out two years and still fails to address UNH's immediate need.

According to the NCAA Manual for 2002-03, Operating by-law
14.5.5.2.10, you can have a one time transfer in Division I, and NOT have to sit out a year, if you participate in a sport OTHER than basketball, Division I-A football, or MEN'S ice hockey.

My understanding of the new rule, as was explained to me by one of the D1 coaches, is that there is a general agreement between the teams in which you have to sit out one year if you transfer within the same division, however this does not apply if you transfer between divisions. There were 3 sophs that transfered from Findlay to North Dakota at the end of last year.

To see if we are all on the same page with this issue, the NCAA does not require student athletes to sit out one year in womens ice hockey regardless of division movement. However, conferences may require athletes to sit one year in matters of inter conference transfers. This was the case with the player planning to tranfer from Minnestoa to St Cloud earlier this season.

I think that would be a special case anyway, since UND did not have a D-I program prior to this season. Two players transferred from UM to UMD for Duluth's first season, and they did not have to sit at all even though that was "in conference". I think it makes sense because the student athlete did not have the chance to sign with the new program coming out of high school, because they were not yet giving scholarships.

I'm still waiting to find out, they usually post that on the website, but I haven't seen anything about it yet...

I went to the banquet and awards went as follows:

Colleen Coyne (best defensemen) - Kristen Thomas
Tricia Dunn (best defensive forward) - Annie Fahlenbock
Unsung Hero - Carolyn Gordon
Roookie Of The Year - Lindsay Hansen
Academic Excellence - Allison Edgar
Sue Merz (7th player) - Chandy Kaip
Karen Bye (MVP) - Jen Huggon
Fan Favorite - Jen Huggon

And Huggon got her All- American photo presented to her. It's the first one that will be hung in the Whitt IN COLOR! It looks good!

Hillary will not be returning for a 5th year, i believe she is headed to Penn State to do some graduate work as an athletic trainer.
To be honest, many of the seniors will be around the state next year doing different things! Look for Huggon to POSSIBLY be on the soccer team next year. She is wicked good and just a heads up to look out for her.
Captains for next year are: Kristen Thomas (C) Janine Goulet (A) and Carolyn Gordon (A) -- good picks i think!!
I don't know much about recruits but if i've heard right (through the grape vine) we have 3 goalies and a couple forwards and a few defensemen. One of the D-men is supposed to be quite the player (and a BIG girl) But this is just what i have heard from time to time, don't know if any of it has changed so don't hold me to it.
CO CATS!!!
PS - coach mac's wife just had a baby girl last Thursday, she is SO CUTE!

Wow, congrats to Coach Mac and family.. and congrats to the 'cats, and especially the seniors..
I didn't know Huggon was a soccer player, that'd be pretty sweet if she could make the team.. I remember Thornton being quite the two sport start a few years ago...

Huggon will get a color photo up in the hallway? That's pretty sweet... Is it an action shot? Hopefully Ayers will join her next Spring!

thanks for the recap 24

Happened to hear recently that former UMD goalie Maghan Grahn has decided to come back to girls hockey after a year of playing guys juniors up in Canada, and UNH is where she plans to do it. IMO great news for UNH fans as Maghan is definetely a great goaltender!

Yes, Huggon hasn't played soccer since her days in high school at Cushing, but when she came to college she had to pick one sport or the other and went with hockey but always had a love for soccer. I'm telling you the girl can play - check her out on some of the spring games if you can (She is #10)!
Her picture is not a game/action photo. I guess she went to media services and they took one and made it up for her, but it still looks good.
That would be awesome if the UMD girl comes to play at UNH. I will definitely look for her to come in next year. Thanks for the info
