Can Anyone explain to me what makes a club team D1 and D2?For instance Michigan State's club team is D2. But Western and Eastern Michigan Club teams are D1. I think that Michigan State is bigger than both of these two combined.

thanks

Usually the difference is if a team has their own Rink. Iowa doesn't have their own rink but have a place to practice and for games in Iowa city, they are d2 club....If they get their own rink they draw fans and move up a level to compete with tougher competition.

Now Michigan State's club team is probably d2 club because the amount of money given by the university to the club team meets cub2 standards. Obviously there maybe more reasons for the MS situation.

Penn State is D1 club; they have their own rink and plenty of money.....national champions for 3 years in a row and on the verge of going D1 sanctioned, meaning the top NCAA level

The biggest issue is money. The teams that are strong DI programs have strong support from the University and fans, Iowa State, Penn State, Illinois, Eastern Michigan. Most of the stronger DII teams are lacking in both of those areas. MSU, Michigan, and Miami all have NCAA programs that garner all of the attention. The Club teams are treated like red-headed step children.

Teams like Indiana, NYU, and Oakland cannot afford the expenses of being a DI program. Bussing to many games is not an option, so you have to fly.

Thanks for the clarification. It sounds like it is only a money issue. I played on the club team for ferris, and we were DII and we played and beat several DI teams. I didn't think that caliber of play was any better or different, but now that I think about it, when we played some of the schools there were full arenas, where when we played at munn, yost, or at home, the place only had a couple parents and a couple girlfriends.
