Wow! Pretty surprised to see Drury traded...regardless of whom they got in return!
Just saw this on USA Today.. man, did the Flames get the best of this one. How does Pierre Lacroix make this trade sober? WHat do the Avs like about this? They're short on D, but giving up Drury??

not liking it... drury has historically scored big goals... he gets his share of points, but when it comes down to it, he always seems to have his hand in a game winner or an ot goal

Maybe it's a money deal? As in the Avs are trying to save some?

Who is more affected by this trade? Is it:
A) The Calgary Flames who now have Conroy, Iginla AND Drury at forward?
B) The Avs, who pick up some new talent (which they've historically been very good at cultivating)
C) The BU fans who have Chris Drury Colorado Avalanche jerseys?
Money is the only reason I can think of, but if I had a choice of who to spend money on, I'd pick Drury over some of their older stars. He's barely hit his peak years and he's already been invaluable in many facets. That's a really tough guy to give up - someone I'd want to build a team around in the future. Besides, since when does Colorado care how much money they spend???? :p
Guess this makes Reinprecht a definite second-liner.

Calgary is looking like a pretty good up and coming team to watch.

I'm sad to see Drury leave the Avalanche.
However, being away from all the offense power that Colorado has may let Drury shine. Hopefully Drury is put on the first line with Inginla and has a breakout year!!

I can't believe nobody's seen the point of this. The Avs are desperately looking to shore up the defense, which has two stars and a bunch of scrubs, and this trade sort of does it. I'm thrilled about it, though, because I'll bet I could actually root for Drury when he's not wearing an Evillanche uni.
Thank God they didn't get Iginla.

Or maybe the Flames will put him on a line with Kobasew.......
Caustic, I said before they are short on defense, but IMO, there is NO way I would give up Drury. Lacroix probably wants to keep Sakic and Forsberg together, since they work well, but man.. maybe I'm crazy, but I'd be willing to give up 33 year old Sakic before I give up 26 year old Drury. The fans probably would've rioted, though. I'd be interested to know if Drury was Calgary's #1 choice and who Lacroix refused to trade. Lacroix is obviously more concerned about the present than the future (which is obvious in many of his signings).

Well, it seems unlikely they'd break up Conroy and Iginla after last years career best seasons for BOTH of them...

Why?
Avalanche--
They needed to get better and deeper on defense. Derek Morris is wonderfully talented, though a bit injury-prone. It's a good deal in that respect.
They also get a couple of guys that will help out on offense. Neither is a big scorer, but I think they're better than they've played recently.
Somehow, Colorado will get the most out of McAmmond and Shantz. They always seem to get the most out of guys that nobody thinks are any good.
I think their big thing is that they avoid having to sign Drury in a couple years. Get something for him now before you start looking desperate to make a deal, because his trade value diminishes when you look desperate to get a deal done.
Flames--
They get a recognizable face. They get another budding young star. They get younger. They get more skilled. They also increase their chances of being good short-term, which will help rebuild the season-ticket base, which is too small right now.
Also, Yelle gives them a banger who can skate and score.
I actually like this trade for both teams. But I think it immediately benefits Calgary a lot more than it does Colorado.

I know Chris Drury doesn't like this trade. He loved it out in Colorado. (and they loved him)

Heard rumors of this trade a couple of weeks ago. As someone pointed out earlier the Avs were really looking for another defenseman who could run the power play. They got what they wanted. Hope this turns out well for Drury - he has had nothing but success. If the Avs need offensive punch they always seem to be able to pull something off at the trade deadline. Solidifies their blueline, but Drury is a lot to give.

I was shocked, but not surprised by this trade. Calgary had every intention of trading Derek Morris; they have a talented corps of d-men and had to make room for Jordan Leopold. Almost every team in the league wanted Morris, as I think nobody really knows how good he is because he played in Calgary on some bad teams and is injury-prone. The Bruins wanted him badly, but Calgary wanted Samsonov, whom the Bruins weren't willing to part with.
After losing Kasparitis to the Rangers, Colorado desperately needed another top-flight defenseman to complement Blake, Foote and Skoula. After those three (and Greg deVries), the talent they have on defense drops off considerably, as the rest of their defenseman have limited NHL experience. In addition, Colorado had been using Drury as their primary trade bait; at one point Chris was rumored to be Boston-bound, when the Bruins came very close to sending Guerin to Colorado (in hindsight, the Bruins would've been much better off making that trade).
Anyhow, Colorado still has 3 young forwards (Radim Vrbata, Vaclav Nedorost, and Riku Hahl) who could turn out to be as good/even better than Tanguay and Hedjuk. All of them saw some playing time in Colorado last season, but will probably get more playing time this year. McAmmond is a good complementary player (like Steve Reinprecht), but I think this trade doesn't hurt Colorado and makes Calgary a much more formidable team in the West. Adding Drury instantly makes them better offensively and gives their offense another go-to guy with Iginla.

Yep...and Craig Conroy LOVED St. Louis too...and they loved him. I think he's liking Calgary okay...
